William Wehmer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Burroughs Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Mar. 31, 2026.
The world seemed to pause for a moment, William Charles Wehnmer, 89, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of March 25, with Celestial, his wife, holding his hand. His final moments were marked by quiet reflection, dignity, and profound expressions of love. He was born on July 13, 1936, in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, To William Wehmer and Myrtle Elkins Wehmer.

A man of remarkable presence, Bill was a force whose authority, striking features, and unmistakable strength filled every room he entered. This striking presence is captured beautifully in the photograph chosen to honor him now. An image that reflects the same quiet confidence he carried from his youth until his final days.

That same presence first revealed itself on the gridiron at Penn State, where Bill was personally recruited by a young Joe Paterno and played from 1954 to 1958 as both a defensive and offensive lineman for the Nittany Lions. A standout athlete as well as a gifted engineering and math scholar, he embodied the rare union of elite athletic performance and academic excellence.

After graduating from Penn State with a degree in engineering, Bill joined General Motors, where his intelligence, drive, and natural leadership quickly distinguished him. In the mid-1960's Bill became Plant Manger for GM Packard Electric in Warren, Ohio. He retired as Director of Engineering, for all Design and Engineering worldwide. Rising to executive status at a young age, he went on to travel the world as a respected and accomplished leader, earning admiration from colleagues and customers alike.

Bill will not only be remembered by the company titles he held- Director of Engineering, Rel/QC, and MFG- but by the commitment to excellence he wholeheartedly believed in. To many employees, he was a bigger-than life visionary. Bill leaves behind not only a loving family, but also a generation of young talent committed to excellence.

For the past 30 years, Bill shared a deep and enduring love with his wife, Celestial. She remained faithfully by his side until his final breath.

Bill is survived by his wife, Celestial; his sons, Bill and his wife, Trish, Rick and his wife, Bev, Chip and his wife, Brenda, and Andy and his wife, Robin; his brother Bob Wehmer, and his wife, Pat. He was preceded in death by the mother of his sons, Sally B. Wehmer. Among Bill's greatest blessings were his beloved grandchildren, Sarah, Jessica, Anna, Johnny, Stephanie, Sean, Samantha, Elise, and Julia, and his 10 cherished great-grandchildren, who carry forward his legacy and brought him immeasurable pride, joy, and love.

In accordance with Bill's wishes, there will be no memorial service at this time. Final interment will be held at a later date.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Family Hospice of Myrtle Beach, SC for their compassionate care and dedication.
