William J. White, Jr., age 84, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully at Lowell General Hospital on Monday February 9, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Linda M. (Marcy) White with whom he enjoyed 61 years of marriage.
William, known more commonly as Bill, was born in Springfield, MA on January 18, 1942, and was the son of the late William J. and Florence A. (Whitney) White. Bill was an accomplished athlete and student. He enlisted in the Army where he served two tours in Vietnam. Bill then decided to make the Army a career and proudly served his country for 23 years in total in the Artillery and as an Airbourne Ranger, being recognized with various medals and commendations. After retiring from the Army, Bill had an extensive career in the private sector. Education and knowledge were always on the forefront, where he obtained multiple advanced degrees including two master's and a law degree. When Bill wasn't in the classroom, he enjoyed the outdoors, nature, reading, music, and cooking. He was an active runner, having completed the Boston Marathon four times, and enjoyed fishing and boating. He was a life member and the 2010 Commodore of the Charlesgate Yacht Club on the Charles River in Cambridge, MA. Additionally, Bill had a passion for classical music and singing. As a tenor, he sang over the years in various choirs, and most recently was a member of the church choir at Central Congregational Church in Chelmsford. Animals were always his soft spot, and he enjoyed owning many cats over the years. He was also very giving and donated routinely to various charities.
In addition to his loving wife, William is survived by his son Philip D White and his wife Carolyn of East Greenwich, RI and his granddaughter, Makenzie K White of Manchester, NH. William is also survived by his sister Deborah E Tibbetts of Kentucky and his brother Barry White and his wife Ann of Maine.
