William Wiggins Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jones Funeral Home - Swansboro on Dec. 2, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Our family is saddened to announce the death of our father, William (Bill) Andrew Wiggins, Jr. on November 24th, 2025 in Virginia Beach, VA at the age of 87. He died after a battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a super Parkinson's Syndrome and congestive heart failure. We are joyful that he is now with his Lord.

He was born September 26, 1938, the oldest son of the late Bill and Margie Wiggins. Bill is survived by two older sisters, Isabelle Eubank (Guy) of Kinston, NC, and Lora Bridwell (R.W.) of Kinston, NC; three younger brothers, Robert Wiggins (Kathy) of Morehead City, NC, Thomas Wiggins of Windsor, VA, and Leonard Wiggins (LaRae) of Peletier, NC; three children, Lloyd Wiggins (Dee Dee) of Yorktown, VA, Vickie Reynolds (Scott) of Chesapeake, VA, and Janet Rowlette (Bob) of Russellville, AR; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nephews and nieces. He is pre-deceased by two sisters, Olive Turner (Pete) of Beaufort, NC and Mary Garner (Nathan) of Newport, NC and a grandson.

Bill was born and raised in Beaufort, NC, and was known by his nickname, Man. He attended Beaufort High School, and enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1956. He retired at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer (PERS3) in 1976 after 20 years of service. He served tours in Norfolk, Adak, AK, New Orleans, Atlantic Beach, Portsmouth, VA, Roanoke, VA and Washington, DC. He was instrumental in upgrading the Coast Guard's enlisted recruiting procedures as our country transitioned to an all-volunteer military.

While still in the Coast Guard, Bill began selling real estate part-time in Northern Virginia. He exceled, and after retiring, continued selling real estate full-time. He obtained his broker's license in 1979, and started his own business, 4% Realty, in 1984. Bill became a leader in the industry by charging home-sellers only a 4% listing commission fee. As a result, many real estate companies adopted the 4% commission. His hard work and long hours enabled him to effectively retire at the age of 50 in 1988.

Bill designed, and helped build his dream retirement home on Mill Creek in Wicomico Church, Va. He enjoyed boating, fishing, antiquing, attending auctions, collecting, watching wildlife, attending high school reunions, visiting family in North Carolina and hanging out with his neighbor's dog, Roxxi. Previous hobbies include hunting, bowling, playing poker and gardening. He became a Mason while living in Woodbridge, actively served for over 50 years, including time as Master of his lodge. He was also a Kena Shriner and a member of the Lions Club.

In 2019, Bill moved to the Westminster-Canterbury Retirement Community in Virginia Beach on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay where he made many new friends. He enjoyed dining and playing poker and bingo with the other residents. He was well-taken care of during his illness. The family wishes to express their appreciation to all the caregivers in the Westminster-Canterbury Hoy Center, especially Carrie, Tracy and the entire 2-B Blue Team.

A viewing will be held at Jones Funeral Home, 407 Old Hammock Rd, Swansboro on Saturday, December 6th from 1:00 to 3:00. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 12:30 on Friday, December 12th at the cemetery behind Hadnot Creek Primitive Church, 252 Pelletier Loop Rd, Swansboro, NC. There is very limited parking at the old church, and attendees are requested to park at nearby Peletier Missionary Baptist Church on Bucks Corner Rd. Rides will be provided to the graveside until 12:15, and from the service afterwards. The Hadnot Creek Primitive Church will be open to wait in until the graveside service begins. A reception at Peletier Missionary Baptist Church afterwards for a time to reflect on Bill's life and visit with one another.

Bill had a special connection to this old church as it is located about half a mile from the homeplace of his grandparents, Bryant and Mary Ann Wiggins, and was built on land donated by a great-great-uncle with lumber donated by a great-uncle, and with labor and nails donated by his grandfather and father. The church is now owned by the town of Peletier, and Bill donated funds for the major repair of the building in 2022. He will be laid to rest beside his grandfather, Bryant Wiggins.

Arrangements are being handled by Jones Funeral Home, 407 Old Hammock Rd, Swansboro, NC. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Town of Peletier for upkeep of the Hadnot Creek Primitive Church building and grounds.
