William F. "Bill" Winter

William "Bill" Winter, 85, of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2026. He was born on December 15, 1940, in Boscobel, WI, to Alfred and Ruth Winter. Bill graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1958 and went on to serve in the Army National Guard from 1961 to 1966.

On June 15, 1968, Bill married the love of his life, Mardell Trautsch. Together, they had one son, Barry. Bill's professional career spanned 25 years with the University of Wisconsin System. He began as a member of the Sociology faculty at UW-Whitewater, earning recognition in the 1973-1974 edition of Outstanding Educators of America. From 1974 until his retirement, he helped design and direct the University of Wisconsin Criminal Justice Institute at UW-Milwaukee, a nationally recognized facility offering continuing education for criminal and juvenile justice professionals.

After retiring, Bill and Mardell returned to Prairie du Chien, where they relished the river, the natural beauty of the area, and the friendships they had formed over the years. Together they loved to fish, garden and travel. Bill could often be found enjoying a spirited game of Sheepshead with his fellow card enthusiasts.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Mardell, his son, Barry (Mari) Winter (Las Vegas), his grandson, Kenzo, his sister, Judy Jacobson (Prairie du Chien), numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Susan (Chip) Gentz.

One of Bill's favorite poems, by Max Ehrmann, serves as a reminder of the peace he sought in life:

"Be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars... In the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul."

The family is deeply grateful to the healthcare professionals of Agrace Hospice Care, especially his primary care manager, Tuesday Hansen, whose compassion and guidance helped Bill remain at home and navigate the unknown with dignity.

In accordance with Bill's wishes, a private family service will take place, followed by a celebration of his life in the Spring.
