Wilma Mitterndorfer Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Wilhelmine (Wilma) Mitterndorfer, age 74, of Sharpsburg, MD, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025 after a lengthy illness. She was born on June 30, 1951 in Linz, Austria. Wilma was beloved by her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Wilma is known for her warmth, kindness, love and generosity. She adored her family and loved travel and nature. On many weekends, she and her family could be found hiking in local state parks or the C&O canal. Wilma grew up in Austria where she met and married her husband, Karl. Together, they moved to State College, PA and later Hagerstown, MD with their growing family, while continuing to remain deeply connected and visiting regularly with extended family and friends in Austria. She played an important role in building Antraquip Corp in Hagerstown, together with her husband and family. Everywhere Wilma went, she built community and shared her kindness with those around her, whether creating neighborhood Easter egg hunts, organizing children's masses, or fostering circles of friends who regularly gathered for coffee and cake. She was an educator by training and at heart, dedicating many years to raising her children, working with school-age children in Austria, and volunteering with Head Start in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Among other community roles, Wilma served as President of the Greencastle Lioness Club and oversaw their Christmas fair craft committee for years. As a long-time parishioner of St. Ann's Catholic Church, she sang in the choir to share her faith and love of music.
Wilma is survived and deeply missed by her loving husband of 53 years, Karl H. Mitterndorfer; three children Sylvia (husband Charlie), Peter (wife Aeron), and Thomas (fiancé Allie); five grandchildren who lovingly knew her as "Oma" (Jacob, Nicholas, Loren, Katrin, and Katelyn); two sisters (Veronika and Eva); and numerous other extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents Josef and Anna Strauss.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd N, Hagerstown, MD. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, July 23, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742 with Msgr. J. Bruce Jarboe as celebrant, followed by a private burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Ann Catholic Church (address listed above), or a charity of your choosing.
