Windy Lynn Manning

Windy Lynn Manning was born October 23, 1951 to Wilma Lucille and Harold Eugene Canter in Hiawatha Kansas. She passed away on June 22, 2023 at her home in Layton, Utah. 

 

As mentioned, Windy began her life in Kansas. She was later adopted by her father, Kenneth Robert Hinton. They lived in Kansas with their 8 children until about 1963 when they moved to Utah to be sealed as a family in the Salt Lake City Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Windy loved her family deeply, including her brothers and sisters. In her early life after she married, it was common for one or two of her brothers and sisters to come live with her as they helped each other out. They loved her as she loved them. 

 

She married Gene Waters in 1969 and had 4 children whom she was eternally devoted to. They divorced in 1980. Needing to provide for her children, she became a secretary for US Homes and later went on to be a legal secretary for first Chapman and Cutler and later for Parr, Brown, Gee and Loveless. She worked for this firm for 30 years until her retirement in 2020. Work to Windy was always a means to be able to spend time with her family.

 

Windy’s true joy however was working with children. She loved teaching them. Most of her church service or “callings” were working with the youth in Primary, teaching Sunday School and serving in the Young Women. She took these teaching callings very seriously and was deeply concerned with planting the truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ into their hearts. She wanted desperately for them to experience all the joy the gospel and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints had brought to her. 

 

In 1990, Windy met the love of her life, Mark Manning. They married December 28, 1990 and later were sealed in the temple and married for time and all eternity. Mark made Windy incredibly happy. They both had a deep love for the gospel of Jesus Christ. She often said that Mark brought joy and kindness into their family. Together they traveled to many places inside and outside the United States of America but whether they were on an exciting vacation or sitting at home watching movies, just being with one another was a treat.

 

In 2018 Mark and Windy were called to the Salt Lake City inner city mission. Here they engaged full force in caring for the poor, needy, sick and afflicted. While on this mission they searched out missing members, painted houses, cleaned yards, ministered to families, helped administer church temporal support, but her favorite thing was teaching the children in Primary. 

 

Windy loved America and history in general. As she dug and began her extensive family history research, she learned that all of her family lines served in the revolutionary war. She was very proud of this heritage. This only made sense since her favorite holiday was the 4th of July. 

 

In her later years of life she went on to find over 50,000 unknown names and submit them to the large group pedigree on familysearch.org. She received a certificate for this service from family search and a free admission to the Roots Tech Convention for her contributions. She often said, “I hang with the dead.” She felt a deep connection to those passed on, to find them and have their names recorded. 

 

Above all, Windy’s testimony of Jesus Christ, his church, and his gospel was the greatest legacy she left the world and her family and was her most prized possession. She was always anxious to have her children and grandchildren have these wonderful blessings she prized so highly.  She shared her testimony with them often and with love using no force. She made everyone feel loved and accepted exactly as they were. She tried in every way to live as Christ lived and build relationships with those around her. She is sorely missed. There is a hole in our heart but we know through the covenants we have made in holy temples and the atonement of Jesus Christ we will one day be together again. We thank her and honor her for teaching us these things. 

 

Windy is preceded in death by her father Kenneth Hinton, her mother Wilma Holliday Jensen, and one brother Keith Lee Hinton. She is survived by her loving spouse Mark R. Manning, her children Lori (Clinton) Thomas, Shelli (Trevor) McLean, David (Valerie) Waters, and Michael (Kari) Waters, two step-daughters Rebecca (Drew) Kalina and Melissa Manning, her grandchildren, Jacob (McKenna), Amanda, Parker Thomas, Cole, Riley (Jadyn), Abby and Benjamin McLean, Hannah, Elizabeth, Gabe, Andrew, Bailey, Avery and Elyse Waters, Manning, Sarah- Kathryn and Isabella Kalina,  two great grandsons Westley and Michael McLean, siblings Gloria (Bob) Lambeth, Robert (Karen) HInton, Vicky Maxwell, Verne Hinton, Esther Richins, and Christene (Ruperto) Bonilla as well as many nieces and nephew and dear friends. 

 

Momma, “We love you forever, we like you for always, forever and ever our Momma you’ll be!”

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Snowcreek Ward, 845 N. 1150 E., Layton, Utah. Friends may visit Friday, June 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Rd., Layton, Utah and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
