It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, Yolanda Rommel, who departed this life peacefully on Thursday, July 10th, 2025, in Taos, New Mexico, at the age of 89. Born in Poland on January 28, 1936.
Yolanda lived a life marked by resilience, purpose, and quiet strength. She earned a degree in engineering—an extraordinary achievement for a woman of her generation—and later, at the age of 50, returned to school to become a social worker. In both careers, Yolanda brought intelligence, compassion, and a deep sense of service to those around her.
Yolanda was also a gifted weaver, drawn to the rhythm and meditative beauty of the loom. Her woven works were more than fabric—they were expressions of love, patience, and creativity that now serve as treasured legacies in the homes of those she loved.
She was the devoted mother of Peter Rommel and Deborah Hibbs, and the loving grandmother of Caitlin, Dylan, Zoe, Moira, and Willow; and great grandmother to Scarlett, Avery, and William. She also shared a deep bond with Dawn Grainger, Peter’s longtime partner, whom she often called her “daughter-in-law by promise.”
Yolanda’s warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love for her family will be remembered always. Her life touched many, and her legacy will continue through the lives she influenced, the values she upheld, and the beauty she created with her hands and heart. Yolanda was grateful for having been welcomed into the Taos community that she loved so much.
A private memorial will be held by the family in Taos. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Yolanda’s honor to TENT, Futuros Ancestral, or Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center."
