Zacchaeus S. Shires passed away peacefully in his home on January 5, 2024, surrounded by family. Zack was born to Jerry and Sally Shires on October 16, 1947, in Progress, Texas. He was the youngest of ten siblings and the true definition of the baby of the family.
The Shires family moved to Brock, Texas in 1960. Here in Brock, Zack was heavily involved in FFA and employed full time as a nurseryman. Upon graduation from Brock High School in 1966, Zack continued his work as a nurseryman for Robert Cole. After mastering his trade, in 1976, Zack opened Zack’s Nursery on 140 Olive Branch Road in Brock, Texas. Zack’s Nursery was more than just a business, it was the start of his legacy. There at 140 Olive Branch, Zack became a highly influential figure to all who were lucky enough to work with him. Zack used his nursery not only as a place of employment for many, but also as an educational tool for the younger generations.
On October 14, 1981, Zack married the love of his life, Lanel Thouvenel. Their love was one that could only be written about in books. Together over the years they strengthened the legacy that Zack had started years before. Zack was known for his sense of humor, generosity, and most importantly, his devotion to his family and loved ones. Over the years he held many titles, but his favorite was PawPaw. He spoiled, taught, and loved his grandchildren unconditionally. There was always a late-night lesson on life available whenever it was needed, wanted and/or even unwanted; he was full of wisdom and love. He will be greatly missed by all.
Zack is survived by his beloved wife, Lanel Shires; children: Tammy Shires Willis and husband, Steve; son, Darek Shires; grandchildren: Fallon Wirsing and husband, Sid; Dillon Atkinson and wife, Kolby; Hayden and Holden Shires; great grandchildren: Sidney and Beau Wirsing and Myer and McCoy Atkinson; brother, John Shires and wife, Ida; sister, Ruth Werley and husband, Terry; sister-in-love, Janel Thouvenel; and many nieces and nephews.
A joint visitation for Zack and Lanel Shires will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 25, 2024, at the Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel, Weatherford, Texas 76086
