On April 17th at nearly 90 years of age, Zelma passed away with the family by her side.
She will always be remembered for supporting the Lithuanian Scouts organization, as well as the Lithuanian Lutheran Home Church and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church as well as youth organizations in Lithuania and the Lithuanian World Center through her generous giving. Zelma was born in the town of Taurage, Lithuanian on June 19, 1933. She was the oldest child of Marta (Ausra) Hollenderis-Gecas and E. Hollenderis three children.
Preceded in death by two sons, Victor and Paul and husband Petras Noreika as well as siblings Helena Hamilton and Emilis Hollender.
When the war began, Marta took her children and went to Germany. While in the displaced persons cam in Fulda, Germany, Zelma attended school and met Petras Noreika, her teacher, but they went their separate ways. Zelma and her family ultimately immigrated to the United States where they first lived in Michigan and later moved to the Chicagoland area. At a local dance hall in Brighton Park, Paksto Sale, she once again ran into Petras and wed soon after. They moved from Brighton Park to Marquette Park.
As much as Marta tried to make Zelma a seamstress, she refused. She had various jobs before she found her perfect job at General Foods. As a heavy machine operator, she was even instrumental in getting friends and family jobs there. She was always heard saying "she loved going to work every day" and always reminded the family to go to work with the same attitude.
When her mother and stepfather, Higinas Gecas, needed assistance, she and the family moved into their building where she took care of the entire family! She remained there after their passing, then moved to Bridgeview.
She will be dearly missed by Rita Stoncius (Pijus) and grandchild Kristina Stoncius, as well as many relatives in Lithuania.
