Zelpha Mae Mason, former Cozad resident, passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2024 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 92. Zelpha was born on January 17, 1932 in Callaway, Nebraska, to Frank and Alberta (Ogg) Niles. On October 28, 1950 she married Walter Mason at Callaway, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with two children, John and Barbara. She dedicated her life to being a housewife, mother and grandmother, pouring her love and attention into her family.
Zelpha was known for her perfectionist nature; everything in her life had to be just right. Her sassy personality brought a sparkle to those around her, making her a joy to be with at any gathering. A strong woman, she proudly survived cancer three times, demonstrating her resilience and spirit.
She enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. Zelpha loved Dairy Queen Blizzards and spent many happy hours playing pinochle with friends and family. She had a passion for quilting and sewing, creating beautiful pieces that will be treasured forever. Traveling was another great love of hers; she and Walter explored almost all 50 states and ventured to Mexico, Canada, and Sweden.
Zelpha’s presence will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers George Niles and Ernest Niles; and brother in law Steve Mattox. Survivors include her son John (Mary) Mason of Bennington and daughter Barbara Mason Cloeter of Lincoln; grandchildren Andrew (Heather Joslin and daughter Sky) Mason of Omaha, Ryan (Nicole) Mason of Bennington and their children Peyton, Layla, Walker, Aaron (Lizzie) Mason of Omaha, Michaela Franco of Omaha, Brittany Cloeter of Lincoln and Rachel Cloeter of Omaha; sister Stella Mattox of North Platte; brothers Charles (Joanne) Staton of Cozad and Jim (Jill) Niles of Grand Island; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 30, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will be at at 2:00 p.m. Rose Hill Cemetery near Callaway. Visitation with family present will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. with Rosary to follow at Berryman Funeral Home.
