Elizabeth Brozell Obituary

Elizabeth (Liz) Ann Brozell

1954 - 2021

Elizabeth (Liz) Ann Brozell, loving wife, generous sister, extremely proud mother, and gifted artist passed away suddenly in San Francisco on August 6, 2021 due to complications from a recurrence of cancer.

Liz was born with the soul of an artist although it wasn't until later in life that she discovered her gift for painting. In her own words, "I discovered line and movement when pursuing a career as a professional ballet dancer, and these elements infuse my work as an artist. I am self-taught, so bring an idiosyncratic style to my art. Oftentimes, my work is both intensely personal and universal."

Liz took up figurative oil painting at 40 years old with a fervor and was a strong presence in the artistic community at G Studio in Napa and at her ICB studio in Sausalito. While Liz was self-taught, she was mentored by her dear friend, Margaret Keane. Liz's work will delightfully live on in the homes of many. Most recently, her art was displayed in group shows at Studio Gallery in San Francisco, Axis Gallery in Sacramento, The O'Hanlon Center for The Arts in Mill Valley, and UGallery online. She frequently was invited to show her art at festivals in Beverly Hills, Sausalito, La Jolla, and in San Francisco, among many other venues. Some of her art can be viewed at www.lizbrozell.com .

Liz loved classical music and danced her entire life. She danced with the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Oakland Ballet. Liz continued to take ballet classes until the end of her life, and incorporated class scenes into her paintings, creating some of her most poignant works.

Elizabeth Ann Kirn was born July 27, 1954, in New Haven, Conn. She was named after her mother Nancy's beloved older sister, Elizabeth Ann Turner, nee Tufel. Liz spent her childhood in Los Altos, California.

Liz married her first husband, Dr. Douglas Brozell, in 1978 in Philadelphia and together they had three children: Adrian, Alec, and Ariel. She was an enthusiastic mother whose love of children spread beyond her own. While raising her children in Napa, she found time to help others working at Diogenes Youth Services, Child Protective Services, New Tech High School, and the foster youth non-profit, Voices.

She remarried, to Mark Rowen, in April, 2018, in San Francisco and, with grandchildren coming, had some of the better years of her life. Liz is survived by her devoted husband, Mark, three children, daughters-in-law Erika and Jordan and son-in-law Craig, grandchildren Tenley, Arabella, Franklin, Harlow and Cora, and three siblings, David, Andrew and Timothy.

A memorial service will be held on September 6th. For details please contact [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, donations to Napa Regional Dance Foundation, HairToStay, or LymeLight are encouraged.

Remembering you and your inspirational paintings in the Verge Gallery. I think of you often. As a fellow artist, I want to also live forever through my work.

Today, Easter Sunday, I was at home painting, and noticed the Axis Gallery brochure with 'Urban Mom' on the cover. Wanting to see other paintings, I went to 'search'. I was saddened to find this gifted artist had passed, and so young.
Bless you always, Liz, as you have reached so many with your wonderful gift.

Loving thoughts to all of you grieving the loss of your mom, grandma, wife and family member. I appreciated "Aunt Liz´s" energy, loving life force and passion that she experienced and shared the world. It is hard to believe that her energy would ever end; which in a sense is doesn´t because it lives on with all of you, the lives she has touched, and in her art. My heart will never forget the way she touched my life, as an aunt, kindred artistic spirit, and sharing a glimpse of the world through a different lens. I keep her memory close to me through her artwork I wake up to every morning. I share in the unexpected grief of her sudden loss and can only imagine how hard this has been for everyone. Sending love, peace, and warm thoughts to everyone grieving her loss.
