Surrounded by his loving family, Wayne Leroy Cain (May 15, 1936 -February 7, 2025) passed away peacefully on February 7, 2025, in Napa, California, following a brief battle with cancer.
Wayne was born in Colfax, California, the only child of Dorothy and Jack Cain. He grew up in Auburn and Dutch Flat, spending countless hours hiking, swimming, riding his horse, skiing, fishing with his dad and grandpa, and running through the woods with his dog. These early experiences laid the foundation for his deep and enduring connection with nature and wildlife.
A graduate of Placer High School, Wayne earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater Design from San Francisco State University before serving his country in the US Army. Following his honorable discharge, he worked with theater companies throughout Northern California before beginning a long career with KPIX-TV in San Francisco. Versatile and multi-talented, over the years he worked as a producer, director, production manager, broadcast engineer, crew chief, and Emmy award-winning lighting director.
In 1959, he married Judith Miller and they had two children, Danielle and Jeff. Although they divorced in 1975, they remained lifelong friends.
In 1985, Wayne married Joanne Sutro, marking the beginning of a 40-year commitment anchored by love, shared values, and mutual respect. Family was at the center of their lives, and they welcomed the addition of their son Matthew in 1990.
An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Wayne led family and friends on many camping, backpacking, and horse packing adventures. They also enjoyed San Francisco's rich cultural offerings, as well as a wide circle of friends, and extensive travel.
The family moved from San Francisco to the Napa Valley in 2000. Wayne's retirement several years later gave him more time to pursue his favorite hobbies: reading, photography, and building wonderful things for us in his well-equipped woodworking shop.
A man of great integrity, loyalty, intelligence, and strength, Wayne deeply touched the lives of many. His steady presence was a comfort, and his loving legacy will live on in our hearts.
Wayne is survived by his wife Joanne; his daughter, Danielle Cain of Santa Rosa; his son, Jeff Cain (Shannon Gilmartin) of San Mateo; and his grandchildren, Lulu, Milo, Jeffrey, and John. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Wayne was predeceased by his parents and his beloved youngest son, Matthew.
According to his wishes, Wayne's ashes were placed to rest at Tulocay Cemetery in a private service. For those wishing to remember Wayne with a memorial gift, the family suggests Keep Tahoe Blue (
keeptahoeblue.org) or a charity of the donor's choosing.
