Anne Bennett Obituary

Anne Scudder Bennett
Anne Scudder Bennett - longtime Wilton resident and devoted member of the New Canaan Presbyterian Church - passed away peacefully on Monday, March 1, 2021, surrounded by members of her loving family.
Born on November 13, 1928, in Jamaica, Long Island, Anne was the second child of Sydney Johnston Scudder and June Tupper Scudder. Her teenage years were spent in Florida.
A descendant of Dr. John Scudder - a prominent nineteenth-century medical missionary to India - Anne was inspired at a young age to pursue a career in medicine. Graduating from Florida State University in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in science, Anne would go on to work at the University of Emory Hospital as a laboratory technologist. It was at Emory that she met her husband, Dr. Alfred McDowell Bennett. They were married in 1957, and he preceded her death.
Anne is survived by her four children, their spouses, and their respective children and grandchildren: Elizabeth Ann and Robert Clough; Katharine Carlyle and Bernard Hughes; David McDowell Bennett and Penny (Levitt) Bennett; and John Buell Bennett and Deirdre (Kavolius) Bennett.
Anne's life was rich with people who loved her. She touched many lives throughout her ninety-two years, even those whose paths she crossed only briefly. A caring individual who could be generous to a fault, Anne was a loving and non-judgmental soul. Nevertheless, when situations in her life called for grit and perseverance, she could be a true warrior of the "greatest generation," a feisty force that could stop even her most rambunctious grandchildren dead in their tracks.
Like many who came of age in the years between the Great Depression and the Second World War, Anne certainly did not have an easy life: she was taken from a loving family at the age of seven and lived with mostly unfamiliar relatives until she was reunited with her original family at fourteen. Anne had a tough start as a young woman; and yet, these challenging experiences never hardened her or made her resentful. In fact, quite the opposite.
Anne taught her family a great deal about the importance of giving to others and savoring the small, simple moments of beauty in life. She firmly believed that no matter how difficult things could become, there was always a higher purpose guiding her through this world.
Anne loved life. She adored gardening and cooking, knitting and reading, helping others, and especially the birds and many furry canine friends that passed through her life. Above all, she loved her family. There is little doubt that she is surrounded by a loving crowd of friends, family, and animals since embarking on her next great adventure.
Anne's extended family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of VNA Hospice and The Greens of Cannondale in Wilton, Connecticut, for their endless kindness and care.
A celebration of her life is scheduled for the Spring. Please visit www.collinsfh.com/obituaries to leave condolences.
