Alice Engle Obituary

Alice Engle

LANCASTER: Alice Elizabeth Engle was born in Newark, May 31, 1920, passed away May 3, 2014 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of John Clyde and Minnie Nevis (Sturman) Buckingham of Newark.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Engle Sr., of Lancaster, three close sisters, Helen (Jack) Warrington (Robert) English, Marian (Howard) Miller and Marjorie (Reverend Lester) Watts.

She is survived by two sons, Roger Jr. (Connie) and John (Diann) of Lancaster; seven grandchildren, Carrie Engle, BSN, of Powell, Major Roger Engle III, MS, USAF (Sue), of San Antonio TX, Charles Engle, MS, of Arlington VA, Ryann Engle, MPH, of Cambridge, MA, Rachle Reno (Brett), Delaware, Ohio, Elizabeth Engle, BA, Lancaster, and Kristen Engle, MFA, Brattleboro, VT; eight great-grandchildren, Tony, Miranda, and Vincent Gerace of Columbus, Tori Gerace (Justin) Blain of Mount Vernon, Thomas, Alex, Rebecca, and Jacob Engle of San Antonio, TX; one great-great grandson, Jackson Reese Blain of Mount Vernon, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

Alice was a member of First United Methodist Church for 73 years. She became a member after marrying Roger on December 6, 1941, the eve of Pearl Harbor. She was active in Eastern Star, Fairfield CCL, and various Church groups. She and Roger traveled the world, including Africa, Europe and Japan. They spent every wedding anniversary from 1984 to 1996 at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN., enjoying the festive atmosphere, Christmas decorations and country music.

Alice was devoted to her family and home. She believed in organization, neatness and proper decorum and appearance. She was a child of the Great Depression, frugal, but nothing was ever more important than her family. She always had toys and cookies for good little kids. She kept a scrapbook for each grandchild, preserving photos, newspaper clippings and mementos.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church by Alice's good friend, the Reverend Cheryl Foulk. Burial will follow at Forest Rose Cemetery. Friends and family may call at Halteman-Fett and Dyer Funeral Home, Lancaster from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

I wish I could be there to say goodbye, but I know that you have already gone to a much better place. I can imagine that Granddad was anxiously awaiting your arrival and you are happy to be by his side. I want you to know that you have taught me so much. Growing up your home provided me place of love and security, where I knew you were waiting with open arms. I remember thinking that you and Grandpa had found what truly mattered in this world and hoping that I would be so lucky. Your devotion to each other and the love you showed for your children gave me something to aspire to in my own life. I thank you for giving me the strength and good sense to find that for myself. I apologize that I cannot be there these next couple of days, but you of all people understood the obligations and hardships of military service. I will miss hearing your stories of those years during the war when you waited for Grandpa, a heart filled with young love, the unknown and the distance between you eased only by the few letters that made it home. Yet, you never once turned your back on that love, in fact for the next 50 years you nurtured it, passed it on to future generations and used it to support you during the hardest of times. More important than any of the material nonsense this world can bring, your greatest legacy came from your heart. You were a Lady in the finest sense of the word, a wonderful wife, supportive mother, loving grandmother and caring friend to many. I regret you had to leave this earth, for it was better for having you in it. Yet I know that your gentle spirit will live on in me and those you loved forever.
