At the boarding house on Cleveland Ave in the '70s, a few students would make their way up to the 2nd story knocking at the door of David's large room. Always welcoming with a gracious greeting, David would close his book or put down a pen and conversation would commence on literature, history, art or film to name a few. We students were mostly a dozen years younger, often wet behind the ears. He possessed a patient way of challenging us to broaden our frontier. What was so innate in David was his gift to cultivate a relationship with the person in front of him: to germinate and enrich.

Over the years and distance, we continued to write, talk and banter. From the earliest days, David often spoke about his nephews and nieces. After visiting with them he would carefully consider their accomplishments or passing growing pains. I realized years ago that because of his deep and active love for his family, that they would be there for him as he aged.
I wish to thank his family for the great care, loyalty and love which they gave him. I am sorry that you lost such a cherished member of your family. Never was an uncle more loved.

David had a heart that brightened every room he walked into, filling our days with endless smiles, laughter, and a warmth that felt like home. Since 2017, mornings at Panera on Main Street and Hot Bagels weren´t just routine-they were moments made special because of him. He welcomed so many friends, especially from Saudi Arabia, into his life and created a space where true friendship blossomed. They loved him, and he loved them back, always making them feel like family. Even now, they still ask about the good times they shared, even from overseas. David wasn´t just a friend; he was a part of my journey, and his memory will forever be etched in the love and light he brought to all of us.

It is hard to put into words how I feel about David. He was a truly remarkable person. I still remember the first time I met him during Orientation Day at the ELI in June 2016. He guided me in the right direction to improve my English—helping me with speaking, reading, and writing.
David was honest, kind, and always supportive.
My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends.

David was a true friend and one of the people who inspired me to think that a better world was coming. He would brush off whatever bad news came and I recalled his bright, sunny smile! He could talk about anything, but I most remembered—and greatly appreciated—his high regard for the classical education that this country was built on. For those of us who either shared this view or chose our future based on a similar reverence, we always knew we had a true ally.

I moved away from Delaware following my undergraduate years but kept in touch with my Newark community, and often thought how David was doing. When I moved back to Wilmington in the last few years, I made sure to stop off in Newark to visit with David meeting on the Main Street of his favorite town.

He will be missed, and remembered by me as one of the building blocks of the experiences that make up my life.

I lived in Newark back in the 1970s and got to know David when he ran a photo lab at UD's Ag school. We became better acquainted when he lived on Cleveland Avenue, and often hosted dinners for friends who'd drop in. He also hosted little gatherings on Sundays at a park near Newark. David was erudite and literary. We often had interesting conversations. After moving to California I only saw him once more on a visit. But he remains a true gentleman in my memories. RIP, David.

David was a dear friend. What a nice photo! That smile...just the way I remember him. He did so much for the city of Newark, and was a loyal friend and a wonderful poet as well. I will miss him. My condolences to all of you. I'm glad he had you there in his last days.
