Mr. Kane was born in Media, Pa., on March 23, 1941. New Bern became his home in 1978.
Eric was a humble man who would never boast about himself, so it is our great honor to let the world know how wonderful he was. Among his many contributions to his community, he was a member and deacon of Temple Baptist Church as well as a teacher of the Sunday School Joy Class. Serving for years as a substance-abuse counselor, Eric also helped to initiate Celebrate Recovery. He spent countless hours as a volunteer and coach for the Special Olympics with his son, Jeremy. A member of the U.S. Marine Corps, he proudly served our country for 23 years.
It could be said that Eric Kane was a soldier of love.
Armed with a seemingly endless flow of compassion, empathy and faith in God, he was a motivational inspiration to all who crossed his path. Having never met a stranger, it was one of his greatest pleasures to help people find and sustain their own light through his shining example and amazing talent for making people feel special. You could always count on hearing his gentle encouragements like, 'One day at a time,' or 'Be good to you.'
When he wasn't working on some angelic mission or another, you might find him working on a computer, reading science fiction, riding his motorcycle or sailing a boat.
Let it be known that whether it was his biological, adopted, foster or stepchild, he loved all of his children and grandchildren deeply and unconditionally. Words cannot express how dearly loved he was or how greatly he will be missed.
Mr. Kane is survived by his beloved wife of 18 years, Pamela E. Kane, of New Bern; four sons, Benjamin Kane, and his wife, Lena Primina, of Morehead City, Jeremy Kane, Charles Kane, and his wife, Michelle, all of New Bern and Charles Bandy, and his wife, Denise, of Union, Ky.; a daughter, Bronwyn Mithun and her husband, John, of Locust Grove, Va.; his stepsons, Jordan Brown and his wife, Danielle, of West Jefferson, Justin Brown and Joshua Brown, of New Bern and his daughter-in-law, Beth Brown, of New Bern; one brother, Richard Kane of Danielsville, Pa.; one sister, Dale Laughlin of Media, Pa. and 21 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 at Cotten Funeral Home and Crematory.
Memorial services are Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 at 3 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Steve Cobb officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jones County Special Olympics.
Cotten Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Kane Family.

Many thanks to all of you that have expressed such wonderful things about my Dad, Eric Kane. He was all of the things that each of you decribed and yet, he was so much more. He was a father -figure to many, but the fact that I shared his DNA made me feel special, not jealous or envious, but proud, because I "belonged" to a dad whose heart had room for so many.
As his only daughter, I was priviledged and proud to be the only person in the world that could experience his unique brand of father-daughter love. He was my hero in so many ways, he was the ruler by which I measured every other man in my life. He was always the first to offer one of his amazingly powerful hugs that healed so many of life's pains. He was a christian, a comedian, a philosopher, a daredevil, a teacher, a healer, a protector, a supporter, a friend, and a doting father. He was the kind of Dad who would guide you gently into making the right decisions, and if you didn't he would offer up his wise and sometimes frustrating, "so what did you learn from that?" followed by, "ok, so next time choose differently." He would call every week to check up on me without making it feel like he was intruding in my life as an adult. I will miss those calls. I will miss him leaving a voicemail that was simply Patsy Cline singing "crazy" on the radio in the background and his voice singing right along with her. Then as sort of a closing statement he would say, "Love ya'll! Bye!" I miss him terribly...What a wonderful legacy he has left behind and how grateful and honored I am to be the only daughter of such an incredible daddy.
Be good to you, Ya'll, don't forget your towel, and thanks for all the fish!
With heartfelt thanks, Bronwyn Kane Mithun.

Pam: I am at once sad and happy, for our loss is Heaven's gain. As you know, Eric and I met while at Craven Community College in the early 1980's. Even then his Spirit was contagious and it was always a wonderful feeling to receive one of his "optionals." I remember the day you all came over with the car full of kids and even more in the trunk. It's a good thing we have Eternity, because there's never enough time with loved ones here on Earth. Bless you in your time of sorrow. Lucy Pleso

Our thoughts & prayers are with you at this time. Eric was a friend of mine, to my family, to this church, and all who knew him. He was a loving, caring, kind, and encouraging soul....we will miss him as our friend and prayer partner on Wednesday mornings. Eric loved his family, loved his church, and most of all, loved the Lord God. He truly walked louder than his talk and I will miss his insight & perspective. God bless the Kane family. The world is missing a true man who loved much...
