Vernon Goodwin Jr. Obituary
Vernon is preceded in death by his father Vernon Leon Goodwin Sr.
He is survived by his mother, Hattie Belle Boyd Goodwin of New Bern, and two sons; Joseph Vernon Goodwin of Asheville, NC, and William Boyd Goodwin, of Rock Hill, SC.
Vernon was born in New Bern on November 22, 1941. He graduated from New Bern High School in 1960 and went on to earn his doctorate in Mechanical Engineering at NC State. While at NC State, he played for the Wolfpack basketball and track teams. He enjoyed participating in the Senior Olympics. His working career was highlighted with numerous inventions and patents across many industries.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at Pollock-Best Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 10:00 am one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will follow at New Bern Memorial Cemetery.

As one of the pioneers of Senior Games basketball in Charlotte, Vernon was a real tribute to the sport and to his teammates. Vernon will be greatly missed for his warm and friendly smile. He leaves a wonderful legacy and lots of good friends...his life was a life well-lived!

Vernon will be missed by his classmates, and I will think of him often when we meet together. He was always excited to be with us, and he was an encourager for me. It was a special time today at his service. Nice to meet the family. May the Lord

I had the honor of caring for Mr. Goodwin at LCI - no matter how bad he may have been feeling he loved talking about his days at State. He always had encouraging words for my son who was just starting his freshman year at State in mechanical engineering. He will be missed. Thinking of your family during this difficult time.

Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of Vernon Leon. He was truly a brilliant man! Ecclesiastes 9:10 says,"Whatever your hand finds to do, do with all your power." And that is certainly what he did.
