Samuel Calvo Obituary

Samuel J. Calvo, 68, of Berlin, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, died peacefully at home on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, surrounding by his loving family. Sam grew up in New Britain and worked in the family business (Calvo's Auto Body) for most of his life and most recently before retiring, worked for the Town of Newington Municipal Garage. Sam, or Sammy as some called him, loved his cars. From drag racing his '57 Chevy Station Wagon to more currently, his collection of classic cars. His dream home would have been 12 car garage with maybe a kitchenette, bedroom and bathroom if he had to. Both he and Jennie enjoyed going to the car shows, he for the cars and her for the music, but at least it was together. Sam had a great sense of humor, even in his weakest moments, still cracked a joke. Sam was born Sept. 24, 1952, in Bristol, the son of the late Yohn and Rose (Jenkins) Calvo. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 45 years, Jennie (Pawelczyk) and two children, Dana Kavarsky and her husband Ryan, Lisa Vandrilla and her husband, Kristian. He also leaves behind 4 grandchildren, Madison and Parker Kavarsky and Taylor and Samuel Vandrilla. He is also survived by 3 loving and devoted sisters, Susan, Janice, and Marie. Sam was predeceased by his brother Jimmy and grandnephew Jimmy. Sam also shared his love of cars with his nephews, Jimmy, Jack and DJ who often picked his brain for his in-depth automotive knowledge.
Friends and family may call at the Berlin Memorial Funeral Home, 96 Main Street, Kensington from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, followed by a service held for Sammy by Fr. Michael from St. Paul's Church, Kensington. Burial will follow at Maple Cemetery on Worthington Ridge, Berlin. All are asked to follow the Covid rules, masks and distancing.
