Claire Salvatrice Lozito Martin passed away on Friday afternoon, December 21, 2018 at St. Clare-Newport. She lived a robust, independent life at her home until less than 3 months prior to her stay at St. Clare. Claire was born on October 24, 1924 on Providence's Federal Hill and was raised in Cranston, RI. She attended Cranston High School and moved to Newport upon her graduation in 1942. Claire worked for the U.S. Government in Newport, as well as - in later years - the state Employment Agency, Colonial Travel and the InnGroup timeshare resort company.
Claire was the daughter of Sebastian "George" Lozito and Angela Rose (Radice) Lozito. She was married to our Dad, the late Francis Joseph Martin, for 54 years. They had and are survived by four children: David Martin and the late Kathleen (Nagle) Martin of Middletown, RI; Anne Nagle and her husband, John Nagle, of Mansfield, MA; Mary and the late Andrew Fitzgerald of Newport; Nancy and her husband, John Langello, of Gilbert, AZ, and her beloved grandchildren, Sarah and Michael Nagle, of Mansfield, MA.
Anybody who knew Mom knows she was passionate about reading, travel, history, Italy, gardening, and contributing time and resources to animal care and children's educational causes. For many years she took classes at Salve's Circle of Scholars, which our Dad helped to found. She was the epitome of a lifelong learner. Claire practically raised her children at Third Beach, and spent hours reading on the beach and porch of Newport Beach in her later years. She had a sharp wit, wonderful sense of humor, and a keen desire to experience life at its fullest. Her greatest joy in life was being a wife, mother, and grandmother.
Calling hours for Claire will be held Thursday, December 27, 2018 at the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport from 4-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, December 28 at St. Joseph's Church, Broadway & Mann Avenue, Newport at 9:30am. Burial St. Columba Cemetery, 465 Brown's Lane, Middletown.
