RANTOUL – Gary Lee Gilliam, 71, of Rantoul passed away on the morning of Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at his residence.
Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana.
A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Lux Memorial Chapel, 1551 East Grove, Rantoul.
Gary was born Aug. 26, 1937, in Joplin, Mo., a son of Howard and Hettie (Richardson) Gilliam. He married Anneliese Ploetz on July 4, 1966, in Berlin, Germany. She preceded him in death in November 2004.
He is survived by two sons, Brian Gilliam of St. James, Mo., and Gary Gilliam Jr. of Rantoul; a daughter, Tina Karmann of Rolla, Mo.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Gary served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1975 in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his service he was awarded the Bronze Star for service in Vietnam and a 2nd Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service.
He worked as assistant chef at the Champaign Country club for 21 years, retiring in 2000.
Memorials may be made to the Carle Cancer Center or the Champaign County Humane Society.
