George Sumner Obituary

George M. Sumner, 64, of Port Orange, FL went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. George was born and raised in Daytona Beach and attended Mainland High School. Growing up, George loved hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles, and spending time with his family at their camp in the Ocala National Forest. While George was a loving husband and father, good friend, and upstanding member of the community, he is best known as the owner of Sumner Hardware, located in Port Orange, Florida. As owner of the small hardware store for over 40 years, George enjoyed serving the community, helping customers solve their problems, and meeting new people. George is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Clorice Sumner. He is survived by his partner of 44 years in business, love, and life-his wife Karen. He is also survived by his daughter Kristy, his son Justin, his sister Sue, and his son-in-law Scott. A special thank you to Karen's sister Suzy, niece Heather, and loving friend Terri who helped through this difficult time and to family and friends that visited and provided comfort in the family's time of need. The family would also like to thank all of the loyal customers and friends who have supported the business and made it successful for the last four decades. George touched so many lives and cared about so many people; the family hopes they keep him in their thoughts and prayers. During his final days, George was surrounded by people who loved him and cared about him. He will be missed every day, but will live in our hearts and memories forever. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in George's memory to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital or to cjdfoundation.org. A celebration of George's life will be held at the Sumner residence on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 4 p.m. Light Refreshments will be served after the memorial service.

Not a day goes by that I don´t think of you and wish you were here. I miss you and wish I could have seen you grow old. I have a feeling you would still be doing what you loved - running the store. You were the best dad. You were the hardest worker. You were the best friend. You were loved by everyone who knew you. You had the kindest heart. I wish we would have had more time. I hope you are resting peacefully.
I love you, dad.

Words can't say enough for the sorrow we feel in the passing of Goerge. I will never forget the support, kindness and help he gave us with so many plumbing issues through the years. Late at night, weekends, Holidays, George was always there for us and we will never forget his overwhelming support for the times we needed him so much. The world is truly a lesser place without him and will miss him dearly.

George was truly an amazing person, and one of my favorite people to see whenever the Northrip family had a gathering. He was always thinking of others and always had a kind word to say no matter what the occasion. Our thoughts and prayers for peace are with you Karen, Justin and Kristy.

I met George in 1980 and bought from him for 15 years before moving out of town. I have always tried to model my customer service after George and Karen. When I get back to Daytona I have stopped many times to just say hello. Heaven is lucky to have George in the house.

For those of us in the construction business who knew George, we will greatly miss his welcoming smile, his eagerness to help everyone, at anytime, his witt and humor but most of all his genuine kindness for all. The community has forever lost an exceptional business owner whose legacy is honesty and friendship.
My deepest condolences Karen, Justin and Kristy.

So very sad about George. I am Carolie's mother and unfortunately never met George but always knew what a special loving, helpful and kind man he was. It's no wonder he was so loved. God will take care of him now.
