JOHN LIPPMAN

John Lippman 88, Ormond Beach, Florida, and formerly of Carmel, Indiana, died February 2, 2013 in Ormond Beach, FL. He was born in Hibbing, Minnesota, January 5, 1925 and was one of six children to Ernest and Helen (McDowell) Lippman. Sisters, Lynn, Claire and Sue, and a brother Ed, preceded him in death. A sister, Margaret Harrison and brother-in-law, Bill Harrison of Naples, FL., survive him. John's wife of 40 years, Alma Joyce (Bex), passed away in 1988. They had two sons, Ernest Lippman (Cynthia), currently residing in Elburn, Illinois, and Stephen Lippman (Vicki Miller) who passed away in 1998. Four grandchildren, Julie Honer, Carrie Lamb, Kate Blauert and Matt Lippman; and several great-grandchildren also survive. His caring partner of 20 years, Mary Jo Saplin survives. He graduated from Wyoming Ohio High School in 1943, and despite having a deferment due to the death of his father, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and received the Purple Heart from wounds received during the battle for Okinawa. John definitely had the DNA of the Greatest Generation. One of his special memories of his time in the service was when he and two other marines had breakfast at the home of Eddie Cantor, in Beverly Hills, CA. That same day, Mr. Cantor flew to San Francisco and set the all time record for selling war bonds. The Great Depression, World War II and his courageous parents, framed and shaped his views and outlook on life. John had a 35 year career with Montgomery Ward that included management, at store, district and corporate levels. He retired in 1983. He received his college degree in 1948 from the Ohio State University School of Business. Of special enjoyment to him over the years were his miniature poodles, Buttons, Spike and Beau. He was a great sports fan, especially Ohio State Football (Go Buckeyes), and the Indianapolis Colts and NASCAR. He also enjoyed walking the beach at the Atlantic Ocean, collecting antique toys, flea markets and Philly cheese steaks. He was a member of the Carmel, IN. V.F.W. Post 10003, The Carmel, IN. American Legion Post 155, and a lifetime member of the D.A.V. During his retirement, he was charter president of the Waterford A.O.A, Carmel, Indiana, on the board of directors of the Punta Rasa, FL Condo Assoc. and was an active and participational committee member of the Lenox Trace Condo Assoc., Carmel, Indiana. He was also a member of the Embry Riddle University Athletic Assoc. During his retirement he especially enjoyed communicating with former Montgomery Ward Co. workers and longtime friends, namely, Bill Ryan, Bill Ingalls, Bob Lewis, Tom Metzger, Gerry Knox, Joe Pilsner, and with Ray Howell and George Schmidt, deceased. Special thanks go out to all of his neighbors, friends, ministers and caregivers who helped John so much this past year. Memorials can be made to the Halifax Humane Society or to Florida Hospital Hospice Care, Ormond Beach, Florida. Per his wishes cremation has taken place. A private family celebration of his life will be held at a later date at Lake Wawasee, Indiana. If there are flea markets or antique shows in heaven, you will meet John there.
