Maryann Schuler Obituary

MaryAnn Schuler, Port Orange, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at Florida Hospital Ormond Memorial, Ormond Beach. She was surrounded by her three daughters and a close friend. MaryAnn was born in New York City, and was raised in Chappaqua, N.Y. She was a graduate of Emma Willard High School, Troy, N.Y., and Duke University. She had several residences throughout her life including Houston, Texas, the Piedmont area of North Carolina and over 20 years in Central Florida/Longwood. She founded "The Treasure Chest of Sweetwater" in 1979, an Orlando area advertising newspaper. As publisher, she nurtured it from a four- page neighborhood newsletter to a popular weekly publication of over fifty pages covering most of Seminole County and expanded it to other franchises. Her hobbies included tennis, golf, travel, gardening, cooking, reading and fitness. She also contributed many volunteer hours to the abused and homeless animals of the world. MaryAnn was a strong, determined individual who never gave up, even in the end. She experienced and overcame several health issues throughout her life, but in the end she could not overcome the battle of cancer. She is survived by her daughters, Julie Lavra, Chicago, Ill., Linda Pierre, Melbourne, and Beverly Johnson and her husband, Merrick Johnson, Delray Beach; grandchildren, Belinda Pierre, Melbourne, Reily and Ainsely Johnson, Delray Beach; her beloved pets, Darcie, Orange Kitty, Peanut and Spookie; and many friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite Pet Rescue Group, Humane Society or Hospice. Memorial service will be held Saturday, September 3, at 11 a.m. at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home, One North Causeway, New Smyrna Beach.

Julie, Linda and Bev, In response to the plea that all of us curtail any driving we can avoid, I will not after all drive to the coast for Maryann's service. I will be sorry not to be there in person, but will certainly be with all of you in spirit.

Bev, (Linda and Julie too),

I am filled with such sadness to hear of the passing of your mom. I have many fond memories of growing up around her: swimming in the pool, riding on the boat, eating artichokes in the kitchen, dancing to Julie's fun music, delivering Treasure Chest newsletters on my bike, hearing her laugh, and the warmth of feeling like I was one of her own. Your mom was right there with us. Her gusto and independence as woman, mother, and a small business owner will always stay with me. I loved her. Her endurance for life and the curve balls it sent her way made her even stronger. Her strength and independence will live on through you. Look for the signs of strength that she will bring you. I'll look for them too. I will miss her.

With warmest sincerity and a long hug,

Susan Kindel

Just knowing you three beautiful, talented and smart women shows what a wonderful, incredible mom you had in your life. She is truly smiling down on her girls and will always be your guardian angel. Much love to you all.

Dear Bev, Linda and Julie,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss of your mother. I fondly remember our childhood days in Beccanna when we shared backyards and your mom was without question the coolest mom in the neighborhood. I should have known then I'd be sharing beers with her as an adult when she visited with me in Manhattan. She had a wonderful vibrant spirit that touched many a life for the better. May you find comfort in knowing that she was loved and will be missed by so many.

Linda, Bev and Julie,

Your Mom and her enthusiasm for life will live on forever in our hearts and minds. We met aboard a QEII cruise a few years ago. She came to Portland and I had the pleasure of visiting her in Port Orange and making the acquaintance of her four legged friends. She was so proud of you and her granddaughters, Riley is the same age as my granddaughter.

Maryann has been an inspiration to all.

Dear Julie,Linda, and Bev, Your feisty and spirited mother was always ahead of the curve. Our Bassett Dorm at Duke couldn't keep up with her enthusiastic fun personality. She always studied lying on her stomach to stay in the best shape. And her laughter and smiling face will always be a hallmark in my memory. May your grief be momentary as she is livening up the heavens. Fondly and hugs to you three and your families; she thought you all were her best work! Julie Hopper

Julie, Linda and Bev,

Thank you for a lovely letter. Your mom was a great friend of mine for a lot of years, starting with our being dorm-mates at Duke, and picking up again on the tennis courts at Sweetwater Oaks. She consulted me (I was flattered) on her decision to buy the Treasure Chest, and we have stayed in touch through her moves to N C and to Port Orange. I especially remember our jaunt to Savannah to see Berta McNeill Smith and Ann Goodson, friends from Duke days.

I will miss her, and will be there at the service on Saturday.

Julie, I am so grateful that you called me and so touched that Maryann had my name on a list to call. We have know each other since college and had in the past few years re-established our friendship. She stopped over once here on one of her Fl/NC treks and we had great fun. she was a wonderful, free spirit and I shall miss her. My deepest sympathy to all of her family and friends.
