Clay Payne Obituary

Clay H. Payne

Clay H. Payne, age 92, of Springfield passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011. Clay was born November 5, 1918, in Eldon, Missouri, and was a resident of Springfield for a period of 65 years. During World War II, he served in the Navy for a period of four years. After attending Drury College and Southwest Missouri State University, where he majored in Business Administration, Clay began a highly successful career in real estate.

Clay achieved many awards as a realtor and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him as he helped many people and made many friends throughout the years.

As a member of the Greater Springfield Board of Realtors, Clay was elected President of Multilist. He was also given statewide recognition as salesperson of the year.

Clay actively participated in many organizations such as The Springfield Rotary Club, The Shrine Temple and the Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to his civic affiliations, Clay made many charitable contributions to various charities such as the American Cancer Society, Drury College, and St. Jude.

Clay was proud of his charter membership in Twin Oaks Country Club and The Tower Club where he gave and attended many parties.

During his final stay in St. John's Hospital, Clay was visited by various members of his church, First & Calvary, where he had been a member for over 55 years. The spiritual help and extension of friendship was greatly appreciated. Clay is survived by his wife, Barbara Valene, a real estate broker and his two beloved puppies, Lucky and Muffin, "the kids".

To all who know him, Clay will be greatly missed, but not forgotten.

Celebration of Life services will be held at 2 p.m., on Friday, May 20, 2011, in First & Calvary Presbyterian Church, 820 E. Cherry, Springfield, Mo. Online condolences may be made at www.greenlawnfuneral home.com.

As a personal friend of my aunt, Elsie Murray, and her children Tom and Mary Elizabeth, I also became Clay's very good friend. It was always enjoyable to visit him and his friendly dogs, and he would invariably ask me to play the piano, which he seemed to enjoy. You will be missed by so many of your good friends.

Clay and I have kept in contact through many years and my family and I will miss him. We were very impressed with his productive life and admired him so much. My mother, Violette Walsh, worked with him in real estate, and then worked for him when he began his own company. I bought and sold several properties through him. Mother enjoyed his and Mary Cleve's friendship for many years and he was a pall bearer for her funeral. He had some health problems at that time and I said he could be an honorary bearer if it would be easier. "NO! I want to help carry Vi." A true friend.
