Stephen Shortridge Obituary

STEPHEN D. SHORTRIDGE

March 6, 2016

Stephen D. Shortridge, 63, of Ft. Myers, FL, passed away quickly and peacefully on Sunday, March 6th, ending his 10-month battle with bile duct cancer. Steve was born on July 24, 1952 in Indianapolis to the late Norman H. Shortridge, Jr. and Anne C. Shortridge. He attended St. Luke Catholic School and graduated from Brebeuf Preparatory School in 1970. He went on to attend Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN and graduated with a business degree from the Krannert School of Industrial Management in 1974. While at Purdue he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

Steve decided early on that the business world was not his future. After graduating Purdue, Steve moved back to Indianapolis and threw himself into becoming a teaching tennis pro, working on the north side at the Indianapolis Racquet Club and with Barbara Wynne at the National Junior Tennis League. But Steve also wanted to play competitively at a professional level, and that path required year-round warm weather and a consistent tournament schedule. The 1978 blizzard in Indianapolis tipped the scale for Steve and he made the move to Florida.

In 1987 Steve married Lynn Williams of Ft. Myers and they had two wonderful children, Stephen D. Shortridge II (Ridge) and Summer Nicole. Steve and Lynn raised their kids in Ft. Myers, and over the years they attended annual family reunions at Palisades Park in Michigan and at Lake Blue Resort in Lake Placid, FL, connecting with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Steve had a love and a passion for tennis. From 1974 until he died, Steve thrived at teaching, coaching, and playing. He was a born teacher, with a patient demeanor, encouraging attitude, and a kind heart. His teaching career in the Ft. Myers area included the Cape Coral Country Club, The Landings Racquet Club in Ft. Myers, The City of Ft. Myers Racquet Club, and the Sundial Beach Resort on Sanibel Island. For several years, he co-owned the Oasis Tennis Club in Ft. Myers with his business partner Lanny Kalpin. In 2006 he joined the Colonial Country Club in Ft. Myers as assistant club pro, where he had a loyal following of friends and students, and where he continued to compete and win tournaments around Florida. In 2011 Steve earned a national ranking of #1 in Men's 55 Singles from the United States Professional Tennis Association. Steve will be remembered for touching so many people of all ages over his 40 years of tennis, while also competing professionally at a high level.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Norman H. Shortridge, Jr. and by his uncle Douglass R. Shortridge. He is survived by his wife Lynn, children Ridge and Summer, mother Anne C. Schwartz, and siblings Tom, Liz, and Mike. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Ann Stevenson and brother-in-law Dr. Todd Williams, as well as many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. The family would like to thank all the caring people at the Colonial Country Club and the entire tennis community that supported him with all their love and gifts, and another thank you to Steve's Ft. Myers and Indianapolis friends who visited and comforted Steve during his illness.

There will be a celebration of Steve's life at the Colonial Country Club in Ft. Myers on Saturday, April 16th, from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Steve's favorite charity, Smile Train at www.smiletrain.org or the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org/GiveNow. The Memorial service for Steve Shortridge was beautiful. The family all participated and you knew that Steve was well loved and appreciated during his wonderful 63 years. His mother read a beautiful tribute to him at a luncheon following and it was so touching that there were few dry eyes. His brothers and sister made everyone feel so very welcome. The picture display was special and the Catholic Mass and music brought the closure to Steve's life that was perfect. I was happy to learn there are more celebrations of his life and that a scholarship may be established in his honor.

Steve is my Sig Ep Brother and one of my closest friends. We all miss Steve's wonderful smile, his loving spirit, and calm reaction to any situation. He never had a bad word to say about anyone because he saw the best in others. We all loved Steve because there was never a doubt that he loved us. Time and space prevent listing all the great memories I have of him.

Steve was one of my best and forever friends, starting even before the River House in Indy. I helped him learn the game, teach the game, and love the game. Many hours teaching clinics and classes together. Sharing Chicken Chow Mien in San Francisco, to hiking the Grand Canyon. i was lucky enough to speak with Steve just days before he passed. Sorry i am unable to attend. Rest in peace my friend.

Steve was the most wonderful man I have ever known. My comfort and blessing is that he knew how much I loved him when he passed. He was so proud of Summer and Ridge. My heart goes out to them. Suzanne 'Tudie' Welch

Although I knew Steve simply as a tournament opponent with superior abilities to mine, it hit me hard when I heard the news from Vicky. I think it was a combination of feeling the loss of a truly good person on this planet, and the regret that I didn't get to know him better. His positive attitude and sportsmanship will live on. I'm so sorry for those who were close to him, as they'll need much time to heal.

I will miss Steve tremendously! He was such a good friend, always smiling and upbeat! Besides sharing a passion for tennis, we also shared a love of cats and baseball. There are so many great memories - whether it was his never-ending patience over the years trying to teach me to play net; or hanging out with Pete, his scruffy white & orange tabby at the Oasis; or dragging his baseball glove to the Sox games to save us all from the line drives, it was always a fun and happy time with Steve. Rest in peace, my dear friend!

Steve Shortridge was FUN AND LOVING and he brought his best qualities to the tennis courts by making his players enjoy every minute special on the tennis court!
It was a joy to be a staffer with Steve at both the Indianapolis Racquet Club and at our Community Tennis Program at North Central High School in Indy.
I send my deepest sympathy to Steve's entire family. I will attend his Indianapolis services. Looking forward to sharing love for Steve with his friends and family. Love you, Barbara Wynne

We will miss Steve's smile and kind demeanor. He never had a bad word to say about anyone on or off the tennis court. His patience while explaining strokes and strategies to perfect one's tennis game are something we will never forget along with his graceful style of playing. He was a true class act and will be sorely missed by everyone at Colonial. Karen Dunbar & Allan Weiner

Steve always had a smile on his face and a warm greeting. He was a lovely person and will be missed at Colonial Country Club but somewhere in Heaven he is winning a tennis game or coaching with patience and love...Wendy and Sonia

Steve was my first (and only) tennis coach when I moved here from California and wanted to play in the tennis league. He was such a soft spoken, kind and patient man. And always smiling. I will always remember those great qualities. Rest in peace... you were taken way too soon.

Steve Shortridge and my Father (Lanny Kalpin) owned the Oasis Tennis Club together for 14 years. Steve not only taught me tennis from the age of 4 on, but great life lessons as well. He was a good friend and one of the best people I've ever known. I will truly miss him...Rest in peace.

I first met Steve while we were working at the Indianapolis Racquet Club in the mid-70's. Fond memories of travelling with Steve to play doubles in local USTA tournaments and hanging out at the river house. After a trip to Florida in the late 70's with him and brother Tom, Steve stayed south and I came home to Indy. After 30-some years, it was good to reconnect with Steve at Colonial to hit, play doubles, and most importantly talk he was certainly passionate about his work. My condolences to the familyI'll miss my visits.

It's unbearably sad to lose Steve way too soon. But I believe he's looking down from heaven and smiling at this outpouring of love from the tennis community and his workplace. He would not have wanted all this attention while he was here but I'm sure he sees now what a huge impact he made on so many people.

Steve was my coach for many years at Oasis. He always had a smile for me, a kind gentle word even if I sprayed every ball I hit. Never any judgement, steady and true. He will be greatly missed.
