Steven Crandall Obituary

Steven Clarke Crandall

July 20, 1956 - May 2, 2021

On Sunday, May 2 2021, Steven Clarke Crandall, passed away peacefully at the age of 64. Born on July 20 1956, in Stuttgart, Germany, he was the son of Chauncey and Ruth Crandall. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Steve is survived by his wife of 36 years, Heidi Crandall. Affectionately known as Dad and Gampy, he is survived by his children, Brittany Crandall, Justin Crandall and daughter-in-law, Maddie, and Mallory Slattery and son-in-law, Charlie; his grandchildren, Jackson, Lillian, Piper and Lucy Crandall and, Greyson and Morgan Slattery; and his brothers, Chauncey, Michael and Tom Crandall.

Steve had many interests. He was most passionate about his family farm on Hat Creek. He nurtured the land and trees to their full potential often telling people Hat Creek Farm was his Heaven on Earth. He had black snakes for pets, he loved history, and was a Civil War artifact collector. Steve also cherished the many Native American artifacts found on his family farm. He was also very involved in the local Boy Scout troop guiding the youth and passing on his passions in life. He was a dedicated outdoorsman and avid hunter, taking him amazing places such as Africa, Mongolia, Mexico, British Columbia, Alberta, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico.

Steve leaves behind his 3rd generation family-owned business, Tectonics II Custom Homes, to his son Justin. Famously, Steve founded Devils Backbone Brewing Company in 2008 and steered the company to great success in a short period of time with his wife, Heidi.

Steve was an extraordinary man, the glass was always half full. He was always happy and always wore a smile on his face. He saw greatness in everyone and gave so many people his love and support. Steve's generosity of spirit was boundless. Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Steve managed his illness with strength and grace, and wanted to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible. On his final day, he was surrounded by his wife and children, who he adored more than anything else in the world.

We came across this story by accident just now, and we are in shock. We lost touch over the years, as we first sold our Wintergreen home in 2011 (a mistake), and moved from DC to California in early 2016 (yet another mistake). We loved Steve, period. He built our home on Pedlar´s Point, and rebuilt it after it suffered a devastating fire. We partied together, rooted for the Hokies together, dined together and talked politics together when that was both still possible and fun. As I said, we are shocked and saddened to learn this news. Our hearts go out in sympathy and love to Heidi, the kids and grandkids. If you can provide Heidi´s email, I will reach out to her directly. Thank you.

Steve loved by all will be missed and left a legacy of passion for life and love. I recall a day Tommy and I met up with Steve one of his construction jobs in Georgetown on Wisconsin Avenue, it was a beautiful spring day and Steve was renovating the building. That was the first time I met Steve, must have been 1981 or around that time. He immediately struck me as some one who was passionate about his job and cared about people. As time passed I can say those traits passed from his father and as he too was a great man who took time to encourage me several times. That's how the Crandall's are, quality people whom we all want to be more like. May God help us see the best in people like Steve and his family do everyday, he will be missed by all who new him.

We are so sorry to hear about Steve´s passing. We was an amazing man, father and am sure mentor. I know his spirit will live forever in those beautiful mountains and valley the Crandalls call home. Thank you for being in a little part of our lives and to this day, our Wintergreen Home , The O´Shea Lodge, is the best built most beautiful home we have owned thanks to Steve and his crew!
