Claytor III

Andrew Boyd Claytor III, 83, died at his home in Bedford County on Saturday, May 23, 2009. He was born in Lynchburg on May 31, 1925, a son of the late Andrew Boyd Claytor Jr. and Emily Minnigerode Claytor.

He is survived by his wife, Sakina, and two stepchildren, Albert and Rachel. In addition to his parents, Boyd was preceded in death by his sister, brother and first wife, Virginia.

Prior to his retirement, he was the owner and operator of Southern Flavoring Company, Holiday Company and their subsidiary corporations. He was a founding director of Liberty Bank of Bedford and Giftco Inc. of Chicago.

He also owned and operated Cloverlea Farm in Bedford County, which was donated to Lynchburg College and is now The Claytor Nature Study Center.

Boyd attended Bedford High School and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was an air bomber in VPB 120 and saw action in the Pacific.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Claytor Nature Study Center of Lynchburg College, 1501 Lakeside Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24501.

A celebration of Boyd's life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2009, at the The Claytor Nature Study Center, 1650 Cloverlea Lane, Bedford. You may receive directions from Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, Bedford, at (540) 586-3443, who are handling the arrangements.

Dear Sakina,
I was so sad to hear of Uncle Boyd's passing. He was an incredible person who gave so much of himself during his lifetime. I feel lucky to have known him. I am grateful for the happiness you and your children brought to him.
