Annie Moseley Obituary

Annie Belle Farrar Moseley

Annie Belle Farrar Moseley daughter of the late Albert Adolphus and Elizabeth Merritt Farrar was born January 21, 1934 in Clarksville, Va. Annie, the eldest of six children, was educated in the public schools of Mecklenburg County, Va. and graduated from West End High School. Annie received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956 from Talladega College in Talladega Alabama and a Master of Education in 1976 from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Va.

Annie began her 35 year education career as a teacher at John Groom Elementary School in South Hill, Va. After moving to Lynchburg, she continued as a dedicated teacher in elementary, junior high and high schools. Her last position was as a guidance counselor at Heritage High School in Lynchburg. In 1996, Annie was inducted into the YWCA Academy of Women for extraordinary contributions in education for the Central Virginia Community.

She met David Moseley while they were both teaching at Hillcrest Elementary School in Clarksville, Va. and there were married on January 11, 1964. They were blessed with a daughter Elizabeth Clarice Moseley and a son David Lincoln Moseley Jr.

Annie was an active member of Second Baptist Church in Clarksville, Va. until marrying and moving to Lynchburg, Va. She joined Jackson Street United Methodist Church (UMC) in 1966 and remained an active member until her health began to fail. Annie served as organist and director for the junior and senior choirs and taught the adult Sunday school class. She was the president of the United Methodist Women (UMW) and director of Vacation Bible School.

Annie was the president of UMW for the Lynchburg District and she was the vice president for the Virginia Conference UMW. She held the distinction of being the first woman of color to hold both positions. She was also a committee member for the UMW Charter of Racial Justice Policies. Annie was the Jackson Street UMC coordinator for Meals on Wheels. She also was a volunteer for the food pantry, the Adult Day Care center, and served on the Executive Board of Churches for Urban Ministries. In 2003, Annie received the Humanitarian award from the Lynchburg Chapter of the National Conference for Community and Justice for her community service.

Annie was a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Golden Heritage Life member of the NAACP, president of the Lynchburg Chapter of Retired Teachers and a member of the Buddies, Inc.

Annie enjoyed seeing things growing in the garden. She would spend her entire summer pickling, and preparing vegetables for the winter months to share with her friends and family. She would always carry a bag with several jars and a few baked goods to share with whomever she saw. Annie used to say, " I like to give a part of me and this is the way I do it."

Annie leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted and loving husband of 47 years, David Sr., two children, Elizabeth Clarice Moseley and David Moseley Jr., three brothers, Albert Franklin (Verlene) Farrar, Andrew Lockett (Mavis) Farrar, and Arthur (Liz) Farrar; two sisters Audrey (Robert) Clayton and Annette (Reeves) Dudley; one uncle, Augustus Tisdale, one brother-in-law, James Moseley; two sisters-in-law Dorothy (William) Tolbert, and Christine (Robert) Marcey, PhD; five nephews, eight nieces, five great nephews, three great nieces and two adopted daughters Deleesa Carr and Maranda Payne, and host of cherished family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 on Friday, July 8, 2011 at Jackson Street United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Fort Hill Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Thursday July 7, from 7-8 PM at Jackson Street United Methodist Church.

To Moseley Family,
I have such fond memories of Mrs. Moseley as a child sing in the choir at JUMC, my teen years learning to swim in Moseley's backyard pool & as young adult working along side Mrs. Moseley at JUMC. Plus the privilege of tasting many of Mrs. Moseley's canned goods.
May God continue to wrap his loving arms around each of you.

So sorry about Annie. She was my driver for Meals On Wheels until she got sick, and she was a very good friend. Everytime she drove me, she always brought me something homemade from her pantry. She is in a much better place now, but she will always be here in our heart. >B. Lewis<

To the Moseley Family,
My deepest condolences go out to you at this time. I have fond memories of Mrs. Moseley that I will carry with me throughout my life. Most of which comes from times of being under her tutelage in the Junior Choir at JSUMC. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
