Cynthia Gail "Cindy" Vaughan Cynthia Gail "Cindy" Vaughan, 65, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2011 at her home surrounded by her family and closest friends after a long battle with cancer. Cindy was a native of Lynchburg and had been a peninsula resident since 1979. Cindy was a graduate of Brookville High School and remained a proud "Brookville Bee". She received her BS in Social Welfare from Virginia Commonwealth University and her Master of Social Work from Norfolk State University. Cindy also earned many professional licenses including Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) from the Virginia State Board of Health Professionals, American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work Board Certified Diplomat (BCD), National Association of Social Workers Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW) and was a member of the Virginia Council on Social Work. Cindy worked in various social work capacities throughout Virginia during her 42 year career. She began her profession as the Social Worker of Admissions at Central Virginia Training Center in Lynchburg. She later worked in Tidewater as a Child Protective Coordinator, Family Sexual Trauma Counselor, Inpatient Clinical Services Worker and Senior Substance Abuse Treatment Therapist. Cindy was proud to have served in the United States Women's Army Corps from 1976-1979 where she served as an Instructor with the Military Police School and as a Senior Social Worker. She was an avid reader as well as a talented musician having mastered piano, banjo, ukulele and guitar. She was a lifetime member of Fairview Christian Church and a member of Hilton Christian Church. Those left to cherish her memories are her sister, Dr. Vickie Vaughan (Gene H. Gill) of Newport News, her best friend, Ann Shreve of Newport News, special cousins, Linda Huffman Cox and Kaye Huffman Ragland, both of Lynchburg, a host of relatives and friends, and her three felines, Gracie, Lucky and Shine. She was preceded in death by her parents, Caroline Blackwell Vaughan and Clyde Alexander Vaughan. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 1:00 PM in the Liberty Cemetery, intersection of Lee Grant Ave and Redfields Road, Appomattox, VA, 24522 with the Rev. Dr. Terrye Williams officiating. With Cindy's ambition to keep her home a Certified Wildlife Habitat with the National Wildlife Federation, it was her desire that in lieu of flowers donations be made to, Caring for Creatures, 352 Sanctuary Lane, Palmyra, VA, 22963.
