Garth Runion Obituary
May 29, 1941 - June 3, 2025
Garth E. Runion, PhD, of Lynchburg, Va., went to spend eternity with Christ on June 3, 2025. A devoted educator, mentor, and academic leader, Dr. Runion leaves behind a legacy of excellence in higher education and a deep commitment to serving God.
Born on May 29, 1941, Dr. Runion dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the service of others. In addition to Mississippi College and Grove City College, he served for many years at Liberty University, where he held several leadership roles including Vice Provost for Academic Administration and Associate Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness. He was also a beloved professor in the Mathematics Department, where he inspired countless students with his clarity, patience, and passion for teaching.
Dr. Runion is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Laura; their children, Amy (Mark) Bruno, Mindy (Jeff) Peterson, Garth (Kristen) Runion II, and Amanda (Brian) Yates. He was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren, Brooke (Peterson) May, Bethany Peterson, Jenna Bruno and Emma Runion, who brought him immense joy. He is also remembered fondly by colleagues, students, and friends who were touched by his wisdom, humility, sense of humor and unwavering dedication.
A celebration of life service will be held on June 7, 2025, at 3 p.m. at Riverside Church. Wearing bright colors to the service is encouraged because Dr. Runion did not wear black. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the College of Arts and Sciences (Math Dept) at Liberty University (www.liberty.edu/giving), honoring his lifelong commitment to spreading the Gospel through education.
