Marcia Patterson Obituary

Marcia Patterson

June 2, 1921 - January 28, 2025

Marcia S Patterson died peacefully at her home in Hiawassee, GA, on January 28, 2025. She was 103 years old. She is predeceased by her husband of 65 years Elmer; by her parents John and Uta; her sisters Norma Lee and Marilyn; and a special cousin Mahlon. She is survived by her son William and wife Sally of Hiawassee, GA and son Mark and wife Sallie of Scottsdale, AZ; grandson Ben Hogg of Asheville, NC; and great-granddaughter Angelica Patterson of Hiawassee, GA; as well as many loving and devoted nieces and nephews.

Marcia was a proud native of Omaha, Nebraska. She graduated from Duchesne College in Omaha with a degree in Latin then began teaching in Platte Center and Omaha. She married her childhood friend Elmer when he was a Lieutenant in the Navy. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. After the war she took a break from teaching when her children were born and the family moved to Lynchburg, VA. She returned to teaching after her children left home. She taught Latin and English at Dunbar, EC Glass and finally Heritage High School in Lynchburg. She retired after 24 years but joyfully kept up with former students. Latin and teaching were her passions in life. She traveled extensively, especially in Europe, always with a keen eye for Roman History.

The family is especially grateful to all the warmhearted hospice workers who lovingly assisted in Marcia's care.

Funeral services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Hayesville, NC.

Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville is in charge of the arrangements. You may sign the family guest book and send condolences online at www.mountainviewfuneralhome.com

I was blessed to work with Marcia when I began teaching at Heritage High School in the foreign language department. She was the epitome of a professional, caring teacher who not only loved the subject matter but also her students and strove to make those around her better people. My sympathy to her family and friends.

Mrs. Patterson was such a wonderful mentor and teacher. She understood me as a person when others did not. She taught me Latin, but more importantly, she taught me loyalty, friendship, leadership, and how to be a better human!

What a fabulous teacher! When I started my career as a LCS Latin teacher, I tried to emulate Mrs. Patterson as weel as my ACHS Latin teacher, Mrs. Eugenia Myers. Mrs. Patterson's passion for the Latin language and Roman culture inspired us all. Her legacy lives on. Requiescat in pacem, magistra.

To this day, my love for Roman history is completely 100% the result of Mrs. Patterson's teaching -- she taught with such passion and just had a way to make it all so real. She believed in her students and supported us, motivated us and pushed us to be better. I didn't want to dress up for a costume contest at a Latin convention, but she knew I could and in the end, I think I came out in the top 5! My original wedding china... I can't part with ONLY because she said to me, "The pattern is so Roman. Good choice!" Her seal of approval meant everything. She was the epitome of the VERY BEST a teacher could be and I will forever be grateful that I was so blessed to be her student. A legend has passed, but her memory will live on in our hearts forever. May HIs peace and comfort be with her dearest family and friends.

Mrs. Patterson,
You were one of my favorite teachers. My twin Tim and I enjoyed our 4 years of Latin with you. You were like another to us all. I remember you fondly and especially you calling mme Tim and Tim Kim. We loved our Latin Club and how you gave the language life. We will always remember you with fond memories. I wish all students who took Latin could have had you as a teacher. Much love to a wonderful woman. Deepest sympathy to the family.
