Phyllis Whitten Obituary

Phyllis Amanda Shiflett Whitten

Phyllis Amanda Shiflett Whitten, 77, of Lynchburg, passed away suddenly and peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at her home. Born in Buena Vista on Oct. 9, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Phillip B. and Mabel Smith Shiflett. She was the widow of Patrick Dean Whitten Jr., to whom she was married for 42 years until his passing on Aug. 22, 1996.

Mrs. Whitten was a member of First Southern Methodist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lynchburg Chapter for over 10 years and served as Worthy Grand Matron. She was a loyal and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and dedicated her life to God, family and home. She will always be remembered for her humility and willingness to do for others.

She is survived by a son, Patrick Gene Whitten, and his wife, Nora, and a daughter, Wanda Kaye Hicks, and her husband, West, all of Evington; two grandsons, John Patrick Whitten of Baroda, Mich., and Andrew Cary Whitten at college; and three sisters, Mary Alice Spangler of Glasgow, Cile Galmish of Rock Hill, S.C., and Debbie Coffey of Buena Vista.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Buddy, Earl Lewis and Asa.

A celebration of Mrs. Whitten's life and faith will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Chapel.

Keeping with Mom's wishes, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society and to The Gideon's International.

I only found out a few days ago that "Miss Phyllis" had been called home. How I wish I had been in town! God placed Phyllis in my life when she worked for me at the Bakery. She was amazing, and could work rings around those 1/3 her age! Those early morning hours, we laughed, we cried. She helped walked me through those final years with my ailing husband, giving me counsel and ideas on how to care for him until his passing last May. I don't know how I would have gotten through it without her! How she blessed me, and countless others! She spent her life trying to bless as many as she could always with such a wonderful heart and attitude. Her "have a blessed day", became my mantra, and even my 4 year old granddaughter will tell people "have a blessed day"!. Please know that she made such a difference in more lives that she'd ever know! You have reason to be so very proud! My prayers are with you, her family. She will be greatly missed by so many!
