Richard Ehrhorn Obituary

Richard William Ehrhorn

January 21, 1934 - June 26, 2022

Richard William Ehrhorn, 88, of Forest, Va., stepped into the presence of the Savior on Sunday, June 26, 2022, after a battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He is survived by his loving wife and travel partner of nearly 63 years, Marilyn Patrick Ehrhorn; sister-in-law, Kathleen Ehrhorn; son, Scott and wife, Beth; daughter, Kimberlee Lasko and husband, Darren; grandchildren, Ted, Maddie, Adell, Mia, Grace, Jessie, Katie, Abby, and Libby; and great-grandchildren, Haylee, Theo, and Jake.

Born in Marshalltown, Iowa, on January 21, 1934, he was the son of the late Theodore Raymond Ehrhorn and Zelda Elizabeth Ehrhorn. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles.

Richard (lovingly called Papa Dick by his family) received his BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1955 followed by his MS in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1958. Once referred to as a "hero to thousands worldwide," his long career in radio technology led him to the revolutionary building of RF power amplifiers that have been used in MRI and semiconductor manufacturing technologies. Additionally, he was a founding member of Signal/One, Ehrhorn Technological Operations, and Alpha/Power Inc.

Richard (W4ETO and W4EA, among other call signs) was an avid amateur (ham) radio enthusiast for over 7 decades. For a magazine article, he once described himself as a "fairly decent skier and a mediocre tennis player and photographer." His love of his huskies, travel, and chocolate is worth mentioning, as well.

The memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, in Pate Chapel at Thomas Road Baptist Church, with a public viewing and visitation preceding the service, from 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. After the service, the processional will depart from TRBC to the Virginia Memorial Park in Forest for a brief internment ceremony. Immediately following the burial, a celebration of life will be held directly across the road at the Ehrhorn residence.

He was an inspiration to me in the early 1980's with his picture in CQ magazine along with QST and his amplifiers. I remember wanting one of his amplifiers so bad but could not afford one until 2010 when I purchased an Alpha 99 and I remeber sending him an E-Mail stating that no matter what happens, you made a difference in this world and what a memorable one it was for me. My Hat's off to you Richard, God bless and Thank you, you will be missed. Chris Burns, N7FS...

What a fine, precious man. We´ve known him since 1986 and were immensely blessed by the friendship of him and Marilyn. We loved his dry sense of humor, generous spirit and care for others. My family will never forget him and will treasure him in our memory, til we meet again. We love you, Richard. You were one if a kind. Much love from the Murphreys.
