Gail and family, I am so sorry to hear of Darrell's passing. We were coworkers at the newspaper back in the 80s-90s. Not only was he an amazing writer he was a kind man. I had many conversations with him. I cannot imagine what a loss this is for you all. Know that you have my deepest sympathy and you will all be in my thoughts and prayers.

Always enjoyed Darrell's columns and books (even if he didn't know about chitlins!) He contributed so much to the Central Virginia community and beyond, his talents were immense. So sorry to learn of his passing. Prayers for all who loved him.

I always enjoyed meeting with Darrel - and reading his wonderful column (even when he described me in print as a "curmudgeon!") His curiosity about everything gave each and every one of his columns a freshness and vitality that made him both a phenomenal writer and human being. He also did me a great favor when he wrote a column on my massage therapy practice, which brought the business a good bit of attention! And his columns on Masters Swimming and Golden Olympics swimmer June Gillespie - these were very helpful to the YMCA during tough financial times.
You made an impact, Darrel! A good one.
Your Old Curmudgeon Jim
