Samuel Wallace "Pat" Patterson III
Samuel Wallace "Pat" Patterson III, 93, passed away in Summerville, S.C., on Sept. 24, 2009. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Peakland Baptist Church in Lynchburg.
Pat was born July 20, 1916, in Lynchburg, the son of Samuel Wallace Patterson Jr. and Ruth Anna Perkins Patterson. After graduating from E.C. Glass High School in 1933, he went to work at Blue Buckle Overall Co. and then Dickerson Buick. He served in the infantry during World War II and in the Army Reserves from 1946 to 1967, retiring from the military as a Lt. Colonel. He married Louise Olivia Sanderson on March 12, 1943. Following the war, he returned to Lynchburg and Dickerson Buick. In 1959, he entered the real estate profession as a salesman and broker. He retired Dec. 31, 1998.
Pat was active with the Lynchburg Board of Realtors and the Virginia Association of Realtors, serving as president of the Lynchburg board in 1968. He acted as a mediator and chaired various committees for both organizations from 1963 to 1994. In 1977, the two associations presented him with the Realtor Code of Ethics Award. Pat also played an active role in several civic organizations, including United Way of Central Virginia, where he served on the Board of Trustees, the Executive Committee and as director. In 1977, United Way presented him with the Charles Glenn Award. He was director of the Metropolitan Chapter of the Red Cross, director of the Lynchburg Area Development Corporation and director of Greater Lynchburg Merchants Association, who gave him the Distinguished Service Award in 1976. Additionally, he received the Special Service Award from the Salvation Army in 1977.
Pat was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Olivia Sanderson, and two siblings, Robert and Myrtle Patterson.
He is survived by his five children, Patricia Riley (Thomas) of Summerville, S.C., Michael Patterson of Lynchburg, James Patterson (Martha Faesi) of Lynchburg, Richard Patterson (Kelly) of Madison, Wis., and Sarah Patterson (Robert Dobson) of Overland Park, Kan.; five grandchildren, Thomas Riley (Natalie), Paige Buck (Charles), Beth Lloyd (Scott), Sarah Griggs (David) and Chloe Patterson; and four great-grandchildren.
