Sylvia Kendall Obituary

Sylvia J. Kendall 75, passed peacefully at her home on March 26, 2024, from a rare brain disorder called Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Sylvia was born in Bedford, VA, on September 16, 1948, to Virginia and Wesley Kendall. She is survived by sisters, Kaye Kendall Crosby, Annette Kendall, and her friend of 70 years and eventual sister, Gayle Robertson Hightower, after Virginia Kendall married Jack Robertson. Sylvia also leaves behind a host of nephews, nieces, special first cousins, devoted friends, and beloved fur babies.

Sylvia graduated from Liberty High School, Mary Washington College, and received her Master of Taxation Degree from Georgia State University, which began her career as a CPA. Sylvia was a talented pianist, seamstress, and an advocate for feral cats. She could be seen nightly at the Boonsboro Kroger feeding kitties behind the dumpsters.

At Sylvia's request, there will be no public services. If you wish to honor her memory, please consider making a donation to the Lynchburg Humane Society, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or Shriner's Children's Hospital.

I worked with Sylvia feeding, spaying, neutering and caring for the cats at Kroger Boonsboro. She was a treasure, so concerned for the homeless kitties. I moved from Lynchburg several years ago but kept in touch with Sylvia for years and knew she was carrying on caring for the cats. So kindhearted! I had not heard from her for a couple years and am saddened to hear of her illness and death. It's a huge loss to the community. May she rest easy...

I met Sylvia back in 1999 as a work colleague. She was a good mentor and friend. I lost touch with her after she moved back to VA but I was so glad she got back to her roots. She was a straight shooter and hard working American. She always had good advice. I figured she was in her 50s around then and I remember thinking one day I will be that age and driving a buick like her! I am there now just no buick. Her pain is over and worries no more. Rest in peace Sylvia.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and remembrances. It was a difficult year for Sylvia, and she chose to fight this battle in private; but, she fought with a strength and determination that you would expect of her. We miss her terribly.

To Kaye, Annette and Gayle,
It's hard for me to believe that your sister - and a good friend of 70 years (Liberty Academy, Bedford HS and then Liberty HS - Class of '66) is no longer with us. Sylvia was a very smart, hardworking and professionally accomplished lady who will be missed by all of us. May "His peace" be with every family member.

Wow. What a shock. I first met Sylvia when I bumped into her in the Liberty Academy lunch line in 1959 (!). I had a huge crush on her after that.

In the late 1990s, Sylvia bought a house on Langhorne Road that had belonged to my Aunt Laura. I made a point of calling or seeing her on my trips back to Bedford. She always had the latest lowdown on various class members. A smart lady.

Her furry children will miss her and so will I. May you rest in peace, Sylvia,
