Thomas Alex

Read Sr.

Thomas Alex Read Sr. transitioned from this life on August 25, 2011 at Lynchburg General Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Almore James and Edna R. Read. Two brothers, Howard and Alvin also preceded him death.

He joined St. John Baptist Church, Forest at an early age. He attended Bedford County Public Schools and was a retired brick mason. He had a great love for gardening, fishing and hunting.

He leaves to mourn his passing one daughter, Sharon Strange of Lynchburg; one son, Thomas Read, Jr. of Forest; former wife, Evelyn Read; one grandson, Charlie Strange IV (Bethany) of Lynchburg; one sister, Cora Franklin of Madison Heights; five brothers, James of Lynchburg, Rev. Albert of Evington, Lawrence of Forest, Arthur and David of Bedford; one uncle, George Read of Forest; a long-time devoted companion, Frances Hicks-Everette and daughter, Katrina; and many other relatives, extended family members and friends.

Many thanks to Dr. John MacNeill and his staff at the Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center along with the staff at UVA Lynchburg Dialysis Facility.

A funeral service will be held 1pm, Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at St. Paul's Baptist Church, Forest. Interment will be in the Hicks Family Cemetery, Forest. The family is receiving friends and the cortege will assemble at the residence, 11121 East Lynchburg Salem Turnpike, Forest. Condolences may be emailed to [email protected] In lieu of flowers, please make your charitable contributions to the American Institute of Cancer Research or to the Kidney Foundation.
