Carolyn McCarthy Obituary

McCarthy - Carolyn Cook, January 5, 1944-June 25, 2025. Carolyn Cook McCarthy of Florida, formerly of Mineola, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. A dedicated nurse, U.S. Congresswoman, mother, and advocate, Carolyn was known for her unwavering devotion to family, public service, and the fight against gun violence.

Carolyn received the Presidential Citizens Medal on January 2, 2025, at the White House for her "exemplary service" and dedication to her fellow citizens. The Presidential Citizens Medal is the second highest civilian honor in the United States, after the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She began her career in nursing after graduating from Glen Cove School of Nursing and later entered public office after the tragic loss of her husband, Dennis, in a 1993 shooting that also critically wounded their son, Kevin. Carolyn led Kevin's recovery against all odds and won a congressional seat in 1996, going on to serve nine terms. In retirement, she embraced Florida life with beach days, gardening, and time with "the ladies." She loved her grandchildren, Denis and Grace, with all her heart. She is survived by her son,

Kevin (Leslie); and grandchildren, Denis and Grace McCarthy; siblings, Janice Petrozzo (Ron), Thomas Cook (Marita), Peter Cook (Maribeth); and many beloved relatives and friends. She was predeceased by husband, Dennis; sister, Donna Sauer; and parents, Irene and Thomas Cook. Visitation for Carolyn Cook McCarthy will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 from 3:00pm to 5:30pm, and there will be a celebration of life at 6:00pm at Fairchild & Sons Funeral Home at 1201 Franklin Avenue in Garden City. The services are closed to the press. Interment private. Memorial donations may be made to Long Island Cares or New Yorkers Against Gun Violence.

My heart was broken when I heard about the passing of Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy. A warrior for Long Island and New York for many years. It was a pleasure contributing to her campaign when she ran for office and exchanging Christmas cards during the holidays. Sending my condolences to her entire family and may she rest in peace.

Carolyn having served with both my father Bill Clay and I send our heartfelt condolences from the Clay family and congressional staff to the family and friends of Carolyn. She shared her integrity and sense of purpose for all of us to see and we as a nation are better because of her. Farewell my good friend. Honorable Lacy Clay
