David Jaeger Obituary

JAEGER-Dr. David, age 46, died peacefully May 8, 2006, in the Chesapeake City, MD home of his sister and brother-in-law, Fran and John Wockenfuss. David had courageously lived with Huntington's Disease since his diagnosis in 1993. Born on Long Island, NY, David lived in Franklin Square until graduating from Valley Stream North High School in 1978. He cherished his High School years and took advantage of all the opportunities life had to offer, becoming one of the most respected members of his graduating class. Always knowing he would become a doctor, David graduated from Union College/Albany Medical School in 1984. His compassion and desire to help others led him to his specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He completed his training at The Rusk Institute of NYU in 1987 and was honored as the Resident with the highest overall performance. Joining New England Neurological Associates in Massachusetts in 1987, David practiced Physiatry until his retirement in 1999. Despite his illness, David fought to maintain his independence and spirit. He cherished time with his friends and family, especially watching his nieces dance. David was preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Harriet Jaeger. In addition to Fran and John, David is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Peggy Jaeger; and his nieces and nephews- Robert Jaeger, and Jessica, Caitlin, Brad, Jeremy and Pamela Wockenfuss; his caregiver, Angela DePriest; and his many loyal and loving friends. A graveside service will be held on May 11, 2006 at 1pm at New Montefiore Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY. A celebration of David's life will be held on Saturday, June 3rd in Wilmington, DE. Dr. Jaeger is truely missed. I had the privaledge of working with him at Northeast Rehab Hospital on the Spinal Cord Unit. His retirement was heartbreaking as I knew what his work meant to him, It was the saddest day. WE continue to display his picture on unit 200 where he worked and honored the Spinal Cord Unit in his name. He was always so friendly and nice, his patients loved him and so did the staff. After his retirement his patients would return and ask about him. And some still do ask.

My heart breaks to hear that he has passed but I know now he is out of the pain he never wanted to be in. My heart and prayers go out to his family, and caretakers.

Blunt, brash, and hilarious, Dave was this California surburban boy's Union College introduction to the quintessential Long Islander. He taught me how to put mustard on (in) a kinish and curse taxi drivers. During my recent trip to NYC with my wife and kids I have vivid images of running red lights with Steve Kronick and Dave on the way to see Stan at Waterside. He goofed on me mercilessly, and I loved him for it. He honored my wife and I by reading at our wedding. I was truly blessed to have called him friend, and am saddened to hear of his death. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Dave was witty, brilliant, a great friend, an endearingly annoying yet trusted confidante during our years at Union College and then as roommates during medical school. (The "Oscar" to my "Felix.") My life was enriched by his friendship, his humor, his intellect, his passion for what was right, his political interests. I'm privileged to have been a friend.

David was a wonderful human being. Members of the 6 year program at Union College and Albany Med have recounted how he was so full of life and humor. We enjoyed his company and truly felt he made us all better people. He was a gifted physician and a valuable friend. He will be missed.
