A man who’d been fired from Moe’s Southwest Grill went into the Dilworth restaurant just after lunchtime Thursday and fatally shot two of his former bosses, police said.
A Mecklenburg sheriff’s deputy who’d been escorting a funeral procession past the restaurant captured and held the suspected gunman.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police would not talk about a motive, but said Derrick Lamont Gregory, 28, was fired from Moe’s two or three weeks ago. He worked there about a month.
Gregory is charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of assistant manager Jeffrey Philip Maher, 34, and managing partner Vincent Patrick Ferens, 36.
About a dozen customers were inside the East Boulevard restaurant just before the 2:45 p.m. shootings. None of them were injured.
Some customers ran to the FedEx Kinko’s store next door and locked themselves inside. Others huddled behind parked cars.
The deputy was flagged down by a customer who ran outside and told him someone inside had a gun, said Maj. Walter Pummell, with the Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Office. The deputy approached the restaurant with his gun drawn as shots rang out from inside the store, witnesses said.
Robert Dees, who was working at Dikadee’s Deli across the street from Moe’s, said he saw a man sprint out the side door of the restaurant. The deputy ordered the man to lie on his stomach and held him there until backup arrived, Dees said.
When officers went inside, Maher was already dead. Ferens died later at nearby Carolinas Medical Center. Police said both had been shot more than once.
It’s unclear how long they worked for Moe’s. A neighbor said Ferens was married and had children. A friend said Maher was from Arizona and used to work at a deli on Providence Road in south Charlotte.
Several people who work in nearby businesses said a fight broke out at the restaurant two weeks ago; at least two people said Gregory was involved. Police records show officers were called to the restaurant for a disturbance at 2:28 p.m. on Sept. 13, but the responding officer didn’t make a report.
After the shooting, police interviewed employees and other witnesses at the police station. Police cars brought them back to the restaurant about 6 p.m. Officers went into the building and brought purses to two women. They took a set of car keys and drove one car out of the roped-off parking lot for its owner. A woman in a turquoise Moe’s T-shirt wept as she drove away. The employees weren’t the only ones shaken up.
Frank McKinney, who works in the Key Man Building across the street and had lunch at Moe’s, said he left the restaurant about 20 minutes before the shots rang out. He stood on the sidewalk across from the restaurant shaking his head as a police crime scene truck pulled up.
“The ice hasn’t even melted in my cup yet,” McKinney said after the shooting. “I just left there.

Dear Jeff's parents and family,
My son, Travis, involved in the accident in 2006, is doing very good now. I wanted you to know that although there are some mild lingering affects, all in all he is well. When I heard the news about Jeff, I wanted to reach out but wasn't sure how. I cannot imagine losing my son in such a horrific way. My heart bled for you then and I think of you often. I pray that you all have found some peace with knowing that Jeff no longer has to deal with this crazy world and walks among the angels. Peace be with you.

Jeff... I think of you almost daily. I never knew how much of an impact one person could have on your life until you were taken away. I remember how much you used to like and talk about my tattoos and knew one day I'd get one to remember you by. I wish I could just show you... breaks my heart still... I will NEVER forget, a week before all this happened, we sat in Solstice and told each other how much we loved and cherished our friendship. That is the best memory I have of us...

I was shocked to hear the news of this tragic incident. Jeff was a great friend to me in a tough time in my life and for that I will be forever grateful. Although it is hard to believe that this has happened I still can't help but laugh when remembering good times with Jeff. I think that is a testiment to Jeff affect on people. I am lucky to have known Jeff. I would like to send my deepest sympathies to all of Jeff's family. Jeff, James and I all worked together at Carrabba's in Surprise, AZ. We spent a lot of time together, not only at work, but after work, including our weekly golf games. What a weekend when Jeff and I traveled to Denver to see the Broncos play! I knew at some point Jeff would be back in Arizona and we planned on flying to Oregon to visit James. Attempts to contact Jeff have been to no avail. On 11/12/07, James called from Oregon with the shocking news. The incident, horrific. The loss, devastating. He was a good friend; kind, loyal enjoyable, witty. Funny? Hilarious is more the word. We would have been there for you and your family if we had known. Jeffrey, I will always remember you. I will miss you. To the Maher family, my sincere condolences. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May God Bless each and everyone of you. Sadly,

It has been a little over a month now since GOD had taken you away from us. Skeeter you "lil bro" was lost for words. He did mentioned that if he hadn't gone off to school, he would have been right there with you a Joel chillin and laughing. Its strange seeing them (Wayne, Ikeda aka Skeeter, Joel playing cards, one chair is still empty and each time they've played cards. A moment of silence and knowing your presence is still there, over-looking the game. They've stated that its not the same, nor will it ever be... Joel is still a hard time. He still comes over to the house, just to chat with "the men" to ease his pain and loss. Our prayers go out to all of the Maher families. If the Maher family reads this. If you could, please send, Joel,Wayne and skeeter "the program booklet" we would like to add his program to our bible. We will miss you! Please call us at 704-779-4709

Dear Mr & Mrs Maher and family,
It must be the most tragic day today and the past week to have such a tragedy happen in your lives.
We loved Jeff and for the past year that he lived with us he was my adopted son and I will miss him forever. Joel lost a best friend and almost a brother.
Jeff's smile, humor and his personality will stay with us forever.
I am so glad he went to the wedding and was with Julie and you for a few days, at least you have this memory of him.
If at any time you would like to talk, call me or email and I will always be available.

Jefwey,
Today was not a good day for me. The news shocked me, I did not want to lose a friend like you. We haven't seen each other in years, but I was so looking forward to getting together the 5 of us again and catching up on the great times we had in our teens. You were the life of the bunch and the craziness that made those years as unforgetable as they were. Tomorrow I will think of those times, and I hope it will be a better day.
I miss you my friend and you will always be in my mind and in my heart.

When I think of Jeff, I remember the lanky preteen with braces who befriended my sons who were new to the area. Jeff encouraged them to join his Boy Scout troop as a way to meet new kids. As the years passed and they shared experiences though scouts, St. Bernadette's church and St. Francis High School, I saw that preteen transform into a wonderful young man with so much promise. It is difficult to accept what God had in mind for Jeff but we must believe that Jeff's role here on earth has been fulfilled and to trust that we will know each other again. God's blessing on you all.
