Mark Dannenberg Obituary

DANNENBERG - Mark E. passed away on August 2, 2020 at the age of 60 due to complications from pancreatic cancer. He grew up in Huntington but lived most of his life in Williston Park, where he raised his three precious children, Kaitlin, Molly and Jacob (Jake), all of whom survive him and cherish his memory. Mark was also survived by his dear mother, Janet Dannenberg, and his siblings, Jeffrey, Terry and Michael, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of Huntington High School and Connecticut College and spent his working career as an Environmental Engineer for the EPA, specializing in the management of remediation projects at Superfund sites on Long Island and in Westchester County. As a teenager, Mark developed a passion for Grateful Dead music. He was also a life-long golfer with a love of all outdoor activities. Among other things, he will be remembered as a prolific collector of personal friendships, a gregarious and entertaining communicator with an infectious sense of humor and an uncanny ability to recite dialogue from obscure movies, and an attentive and devoted father. Due to the public health crisis, Mark's family will be holding a private memorial service at Temple Beth-El in Huntington, but friends and well-wishers who would like to remember him are encouraged to make an appropriate gesture toward an environmental cause of their choosing.

I remember our days at Conn College forever. Your smile and friendship Jim and I will never forget. Every time I look at photos from our wedding...there you are...smiling and laughing. Taken too early so God must have needed an angel by his side! Miss and love you always. Madelene

Mark and I were roommates in Europe with the Sports Choir in High School. We shared the love of music, soccer and family. The last time we talked it was about our kids. I remember the laughter we shared together and will always remember our adventures at Buckingham Palace

Mark and I started at EPA about the same time, and both worked in Water for many years. We both transferred to Superfund at the same time as well. His new office was next to mine. We somehow had a connection or maybe it was his way he made people feel. He was a great friend. I will never forget his positive demeanor and laughter. My deepest condolences to his children and family. I'm inclined a photo of our last lunch together back in March.

I was fortunate to know Mark for many years while we worked at EPA. Mark was always one of the most gregarious, good-natured, and enjoyable people to be around. I remember seeing Mark back in the office the first time after Jake was born and him wearing that huge ear-to-ear grin. I will never forget that smile. I’m sure he had that same look after the births of Kaitlin and Molly. Also, I never knew anyone who faced adversity with greater courage or humility as did Mark. To Mark’s family, may your fond memories of him give you everlasting peace and joy.

Before I actually met Mark, I'd see him in the elevator and wonder is this the happiest guy at EPA? He's always smiling. Then I met him years later and he kinda was the happiest guy at EPA. RIP Mark & God bless your family.
