Edward O'Brien Obituary

SHAMOKIN — Edward F. O'Brien, 92, of 108 S. Vine St., passed away Tuesday evening, June 11, 2013, with his loving family at his side at Mountain View: A Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he had been a resident for the past week.

Born Jan. 13, 1921, in Shamokin, he was a son of the late Frank and Ida (Tomashefskie) O'Brien. He was a lifelong resident of Shamokin.

He was a 1938 graduate of the St. Edward's High School.

On June 5, 1943, he married Dorothy (Teraskiewicz) O'Brien. The couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on June 5.

Edward was employed by Reading Railroad as a freight train brakeman and as a passenger train conductor. He will be forever remembered because he was the conductor waving from the back of the train in the "Last Train from Shamokin" print by Mike Zyla. He also worked for Northumberland County in the Bureau of Weights and Measures and worked part time in the circulation department of The News-Item.

He was a life member of the Friendship Fire Company, Shamokin, a social member at the St. Francis Club, Shamokin, and an extreme Notre Dame fan.

He was very active in sports in Shamokin for most of his life. He was the varsity basketball coach at the former St. Edward's High School from 1943 to 1945. He was a coach in the Shamokin CYO when the league was formed in the 1950s, coaching St. Edward Grade School's fourth, fifth and sixth grade teams. He was also an outstanding softball pitcher in the Shamokin softball leagues and the former Intercity Softball League with various teams. He was elected to the Bernie Romanoskie Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 for excellence in basketball and softball.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert and his wife, Mary, of Coal Township, and Thomas and his wife, June, of Coal Township; three daughters, Rita Goguts and her husband, Michael, of Millmont, Ann Louise Thomas and her husband, Gary, of Coal Township, and Rose O'Brien, of Meadowview; six grandchildren, Glenda Bonetti, Tracey Niehoff, Gary Thomas, Nicole Bozza, Ryan Thomas and Marcus O'Brien; six great-grandchildren, William Breinich, Collin Bozza, Gabrielle Thomas, Desserae Thomas, Brady Bonetti and Benjamin Olbrish; a sister, Louise Thiroway, of Shamokin, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Edward J. O'Brien; a daughter, Patricia (O'Brien) Stanchick; two grandsons, Eric Thomas and Michael Goguts; two great-grandchildren, Blake Bozza and Haley Ann Bozza, and a brother, Robert D. O'Brien (USMC) who was killed on Okinawa during World War II.

O'BRIEN — Edward F. O'Brien, 92, of 108 S. Vine St., Shamokin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Mother Cabrini Church, 214 N. Shamokin St., Shamokin. Committal services will follow at St. Edward's Cemetery, Coal Township. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home Ltd., 120 S. Market St., Shamokin.

We're so sorry to hear about Mr O'Brien's passing. We stopped by the house last year during a walk up the 5th ward but no one was home. Our sincerest condolences - he was a good guy.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

So so sorry to hear about your father passing away. I have known him all of my life. He was a great father, grand father and husband. We had so many fun times with him when we were younger. I know he is up there looking down on us an smiling. He will be missed by many. RIP Ed we do miss you.
