Alice Nielsen Shane Obituary

Alice Margaret Nielsen Shane was born in Fairbanks on March 21, 1954, and passed away at her home in Walden, New York, March 13, 2024, after a long illness. Alice was a unique and talented musician and performer, in Fairbanks as well as Los Angeles and various venues on the East Coast. She studied music at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and subsequently graduated from the renowned Dick Grove School of Music in Studio City, Los Angeles (now Dick Grove School Without Walls). It was one of the leading schools for instrumentalists and singers who wanted to work in Hollywood studios and jazz clubs.
Growing up, her parents Mark and Margaret Nielsen operated a service station and several small business in the College area, where they lived on Hess Avenue. The town of College was a different place than it is today, with just a few houses surrounded by many trees. She attended University Park Elementary, then Main Jr. High (now City Hall) and Lathrop High School. Alice and her family attended College Presbyterian Church, where she was baptized. Alice was named after an old family friend, Alice Mockler, who lived nearby.
Alice became well known locally for her lively performances at the Palace Saloon (then Alaskaland) where she was one of the original players. She also performed with many talented local musicians, here and in Anchorage.
Later Alice moved to Wilmington, North Carolina with her sister Cathy. While there, she met her husband of 35 years, Mark Shane, also a talented musician, who performs in New York City and internationally. They later settled in Walden, New York.
Alice was the organist and directed the choir at the local Episcopal Church in Walden, where she also taught music. Alice is survived by her husband, Mark Shane, of Walden; her sister, Cathy Ibsen, of Wilmington, North Carolina; and her two brothers, Dan and Mark Nielsen, and their families.
A memorial service will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12 at the University Community Presbyterian Church. Music will be by Mark Shane as well as members of the Peace Choir. Please join us in celebrating Alice, our wonderful and talented friend.

So often this last year I have thought of Alice and wished I could just pick up the phone and give her a call. Old friends are the best ones and with all the shared memories of growing up in Fairbanks this made Alice for me one of a very few dear ones that the friendship was maintained over moves and distance and time. She continues to be missed and thought of with the fondest of regards. As Marion May so aptly said, Alice was so very kind and delightful....a joy to have known.

Dear Mark: I just read of Alice's passing. I send my sincere sympathy to you and Alice's relatives. Alice and I were fast friends when I lived in Walden in the early 2000's as I loved Music like she did. Alice was indeed a musical treasure! She played Edith Piaf's "Non, Je ne regrette rien" for me on the Piano while I sang it in French and said to me: "You ( meaning me) were BORN to sing this!" It was perhaps the greatest compliment I ever had during my lifetime of singing. I am in Albany now and still play her CD recordings. Alice, will remain, of course, forever in my heart. Sincerely, Tory Kelly. Albany, NY.

I cannot remember a time in my life when I did not know Alice and count her as my dear friend. Growing up in Fairbanks and only a few weeks apart in age as well as attending the downtown Presbyterian Church our lives intersected in many ways. Our Mother´s knew each other and Alice´s Mother Margaret was dear friend of my Father´s when he was older and alone. Over the years we kept in touch and even though we lived far apart we would call and visit on the phone and often exchange emails. In those conversations we would talk about our faith in Jesus and how that faith impacted our lives. It has been a sadness in my heart to know that she is no longer here to exchange ideas and memories and many of life´s experiences with but one day we will see each other again in heaven. She was a kind person and enjoyed people and was very honest with all. Her enthusiasm for life was contagious. I will dearly miss this remarkable woman.

Alice was my dear friend for many years and I think of her often. We met 1969, I think, and spent countless days together throughout our decades of "sisterhood." So many of my favorite memories were made with Alice and Debra. She had a spirit that matched her fire red hair and she was always ready for action. I will never forget her.
