My first love, my college sweetheart, married for 20 years and father of our two children, Angela Ramos Pohlman and Jeffrey S. Ramos! Ben was in a rock band in junior high and high school, played electric guitar!! He adored music and new every group snd song out from late 60´s on!! We loved attending live musical concerts!!
Not everyone knows this but, Ben was a star baseball player on US #1 little league ball team that competed in Japan! He dearly loved baseball!!
My Dad was a US Army Artillery Officer 29 yrs last duty station was Ft. Wainwright/Fairbanks, AK. I met Ben fall 1965, at Univ of Alaska, he was a star basketball player transfer from the Univ of Oregon where he was a star baseball and basketball player! His roommate at Univ of Oregon was Philip Knight of NIKE (sold gym shoes out if the trunk of his car)!!
Ben and I met through a friend he was dating, Emmy Johnston! I transferred from the Univ of Texas to UA and was voted a varsity UA Captain / Cheerleader in 1965. I needed change to make a phone call one night at UA/Commons, I glanced over and saw "Benny" as we called him. I asked if he could loan me a quarter to make a call...he turned around with a 3x5 card in his hand - all his friends were seated at the table, I quickly read his writing on the card..."I´ll give you money for the call IF you´ll go out with me Friday night!". I smiled big and replied, "Yes!". The rest is history -
20 yrs!!
9/3/66 we were married in Fairbanks, AK. We both remained students at UA. Our 1st born, daughter was born 4/10/68, a month before Ben graduated, ROTC, DMG, Distinguished Military Graduate, only 35 in US given that year, direct commission from US President. He was commissioned in May 1968, US Army 2nd Lt. We moved to Ft. Sill, Ok for his officer training, as an Artillery officer - 12 wks, then off to Ft. Benning, GA for airborne training 6-weeks, then on to Ranger school 7wks, 1st assignment, an Artillery unit in a Cab division, same Cav unit as brother, Ernie Ramos.
We were only at Ft. Lewis briefly 3 months, when Benny received orders for the most prestigious group - PsyOps School - training at Ft. Bragg, NC 9-weeks TDY.
He returned to Ft. Lewis, WN where Angie and I awaited his return with both Benny and Ernie receiving orders for Viet Nam within days of one another, both US Army Captains. Benny volunteered for Viet Nam, he intended on making the US Army a career and I was by his side! Benny moved Angie home to Texas while he served
1 yr in Viet Nam, the most difficult year in his and my life!
Benny´s Mom, Dad and I talked a lot that year, one thing Get (his Dad) said to me, I´ll never forget... "When I was a spy for America during fighting WWII, in Philippines, I never had a specific day I would return home, we never knew a day!"
Benny´s father, was a POW in the Philippines that helped Americans in the air win the war on the ground due to true hero´s like Get. Get was a highly decorated US Army operative!
Benny served proudly in Viet Nam, Charlie "C" Battery commander, with the elite "173rd only Airborne/ Artillery unit in US!". When Benny returned October 1970, he remarked, "Sandi, I promised to show you the world...we´ve orders for Weisbaden, Germany!"
Upon his return from Viet Nam, Benny was placed on the Major´s list and new orders for the only US military - Army Airborne / Artillery / Unit in all of Europe! Benny was a highly decorated officer / Viet Nam commander!!
He was assigned 5/81st, became ""C" Charlie Battery Commander in Wiesbaden, Germany and we lived in Mainz and later Idar Oberstein, Germany from 1970-1973. In 1972 Benny was honored by being asked to join UK´s Royal Artillery unit at Sandhurst (their West Point) and join their elite Airborne unit to earn his British Airborne wings - a real honor not given to everyone! He gave me those wings years ago and, I treasure them to this day!! Our son, Jeff, was born in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, 5/10/73. We traveled all over Europe Greece even! His next orders were for Ft. Ord, CA in October 1974. We loved Ft. Ord, CA and Carmel! We visited Andy (Ben´s oldest brother) Jeanne and Gabe Ramos alot while at Ft. Ord, not far away from Palo Alto!
Benny was totally incredible, all round athlete who picked up golf (so did I) and became a tremendous golfer!
However, baseball was his true passion as an athlete !!
In 1975, Benny was RIF by Pres. Nixon´s orders along with the top West Point and USNA officers (the elite tight crew!!) and became a civilian! I don´t think he ever got over the loss...
We bought our first home in Arlington, TX and attended endless Ranger games seeing Nolan Ryan pitching! Never forget taking Jeff and Angie to their 1st Ranger´s game! We spent a fortune at the concessions to keep both kids busy while we watched each game!!
Benny was the finest husband and father with endless compassion and the biggest heart! More than everything he had a brilliant mind but was deeply spiritual/ religious, always had a very strong faith in God - even in the depths of fighting in Viet Nam!
I´ll always remember his beautiful smile, his endless wit and laughter!! I know you´re laughing and playing baseball with your brothers in "Field of Dreams"...go right on hitting those home runs...if one falls to earth we´ll catch them!! You kept your promise and "did show me the World!"Rest well my dearest, God be with you always!

My fondest memories of my dad are traveling through Europe while we were stationed in Germany. Particularly, running through the pigeons in St. Peter´s square, climbing to the top of the Acropolis while in Greece and learning to ice skate in Austria. So, happy to have him give me away at my Wedding in Dallas in 2002 Dad had a plethora of "Dad jokes" and could always make you laugh.

Some of the fondest memories of my dad are all the adventures we had traveling through Europe when we were station in Germany. Particularly, running through the pigeons in St. Peter´s square when we´re in Italy, climbing to the top of the Acropolis in Athens and learning how to ice skate in Austria. When we moved back to the state, we were stationed at Ft.Ord in Monterrey, CA.
When I got married in 2002 in Dallas, he was there to give me away. He alway knew how to make me laugh and had a plethora of bad "Dad Jokes". Wish he could´ve met my girls, he would have loved them.
