Richard Huebner Obituary

Richard Seldon Huebner died on Aug. 10, 2023, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska.

"Rick," as he was known, was preceded in death by his mother, Nell Marie, his father, Donald Eugene, and his beloved sister-in-law, Laura Huebner. Rick is survived by his spouse, Lorry Freericks Huebner; daughter, Toby Germany, son-in-law Michael Germany, and grandchildren Annaleigh and Lexington Germany, (all of Fairbanks, Alaska); daughter, Stacy (of Oklahoma); brothers, Robert (of Texas) and Barry (of Costa Rica); and extended family in Alaska and Texas.

Originally from Austin, Texas, Richard served in Okinawa in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War before eventually moving to Alaska in 1980. Rick and Lorry met the very day that he moved to Alaska, and the two married in 1984 and welcomed their daughter, Toby, in 1989. Richard was a firefighter/paramedic for the Anchorage Fire Department and retired as a captain. He was a member of the AFD Dive/Rescue Team and was a certified cold water rescue diver.

After retiring from AFD in 1999, Rick began his second career as a seasonal commercial pilot for Denali Air, Denali Wilderness Lodge, Talkeetna Air Taxi, and Warbelows, among others.

After his retirement from Anchorage Fire in 1999, Rick, Lorry and Toby relocated to Southern Oregon until Lorry's retirement in 2020. He and Lorry moved back to Fairbanks in August of 2020 with their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. While unexcited about the return to Alaska, Rick was happiest when near his family, so back to Fairbanks he went. Rick's best qualities and greatest joys were being a father whose devotion was unmatched, and a grandfather who was always there for Annaleigh and Lexington.

Richard will be remembered for being unbelievably witty, unbelievably stubborn, ambitious, driven, charismatic, generous and curious about all of life's mysteries.

There will be no services in Alaska as Rick requested to have his ashes spread in Medford, Oregon, the place he loved the most.

Lorry and Toby would like to include a special thank you to the physicians, PAs, nurses and CNAs at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for their stellar medical and end of life care, and their unwavering compassion and support during Rick's last days.

We´ve met Rick and his lovely family in Oregon many years ago.
We felt as being adopted. It is such a great to honor and joy to be a friend with Rick. I use present time, because he will always be in our hearts! I am a former maritime radio officer. It was so funny to share stories with Rick about learning and using Morse Code.
