Ruth Gudschinsky Obituary

Longtime Fairbanks resident Ruth Ardis (Hawkins) Gudschinsky, 92, passed away at Denali Center Sunday, March 20, 2011.
Ruth was born in Ontario, Ore., June 27, 1918, to Ellsworth Lee Hawkins and Ruth (Bennett) Hawkins. Ruth came of age as the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl gripped the nation. They forged her strength and sense of adventure. At 16, she opened a restaurant, the first of many adventures.
In Oregon, she met and married Wendell Neff and they traveled the West Coast in search of work and opportunity. They picked fruit in California and hops in Oregon. They worked where they could find it. Eventually they landed in Arizona and Wendell found work in the gold mines. There they began their family and stayed until World War II broke out. The gold mines were shut down as nonessential to the war effort, so they moved the family to Oregon to work in the shipyards.
Ruth became an apprentice shipfitter and helped build small aircraft carriers that were shipped to the Atlantic to protect the Allied convoys. At the war's end, the shipyards were closed and the family again cast about for work and adventure. China was considered, but unrest there led them to choose Alaska.
The year before their departure, Fairbanks suffered one of the sweeping fires that destroyed much of the city center. They questioned the wisdom of heading north. But when spring rolled around, the Alaska Highway was opened to the public for the first time and they left for adventure.
Ruth and Wendell, with their friends JC and Vivian Bewley, arrived in Fairbanks on June 27, 1948. Both couples drove 1930s cars pulling Airstream Trailers. They bought land and set about building a large shell over both trailers to weather the harsh winter of 1948-'49.
Like many others of the time, they literally helped build Fairbanks. They worked at Ladd Field, built houses, apartments and businesses.
Ruth divorced and later married John Gudschinsky in 1953. Ruth and John owned and operated several businesses including apartments, Fairbanks Radio & Repair (later Alaska TV) and Fairbanks Unfinished Furniture. She managed her apartments into her late 70s.
Ruth strived to live an expansive life. Throughout her life she maintained her love of travel and adventure. She drove the Alaska Highway 14 times, and traveled throughout the United States, Canada and Alaska. Ruth was a strong advocate for women and women's rights, and always supported kids and their aspirations.
Ruth was preceded in death by her daughter, Judy Neff Blair; first husband, Wendell Neff Sr.; second husband, John Gudschinsky; sister, Lois Bennett; and brother, Paul Armstrong,
Ruth is survived by sisters, Carol Westfall of Idaho and Joan Whitlow of Arizona; sons, Lyle Neff of Texas, Wendell Neff Jr., Richard Neff, Mark Gudschinsky and Steven Gudschinsky; daughter, Cheryl Courtney of Alaska; granddaughters, Elicia Neff, Christie Neff, Jill Neff, Valery Neff, Lanet Spencer, Kambriea Hibpshman, Kaleah Neff, Marney Osborn, Coley Brett-Diaz, Margret Courtney, Laura Gudschinsky Shandalee Gudschinsky and Kimberly Chisholm; grandsons, Kevin Blair, Kenny Blair, Lyle Neff II, Frank Neff, Justin Neff, Kedrik Neff, Ryan Brett, Ross Courtney, Alexander Gudschinsky and Chad Gudschinsky; numerous great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, April 8, at Chapel of the Chimes. The Rev. Scott Fisher will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruth's name to Quota International of Fairbanks.
Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.

My first thoughts of Aunt Artis would be around 1957. Her mother, my grandmother came to visit and brought these wondrous pictures she showed at my grade school of a place called Alaska. Those pictures made a lasting impression on me. I would day dream about this strong woman. I got to meet her in the 90's when she came to visit her younger sister Lois Armstrong-Sunde-Koziej, my mother. They had such a great time. I can only smile thinking of two sisters again playing and giggling like young girls do. Blessings

I met Aunt Ardis once (her oldest sister, Lois, was my mom). Would have been '53 or '54, I was about 6. Can't say I remember her, but she must have had a powerful effect. Have had Alaska in my soul every since.

Bless you Aunt Ardis.

What an honor to have have met this true Alaskan Woman. Men and women of her generation are sorely missed right now. The hard work, tanacity and common sense they had made this a strong vibrant country and state, just like the people shaping its history.

My favorite memory, is the time when Cheryl introduced me to her Mother for the first time. Ruth gave me an appraising one eye squint. It was obvious she did not tolerate fools. When Cheryl told her we rode up to visit her on a Harley she asked to see ....only after her careful inspection of the motorcycle did she give me an approving smile with those twinkling blue eyes. Like a good host she then said she wanted us to walk the neighborhood with her so she could show & tell a little bit about the history of the area. It was a warm Fairbanks summer, birds singing, flowers in full bloom. Thats how I will always remember this Great Alaskan Woman, Cheryl's Mom, and her babies Grandmother, and Great Grandmother.

I always viewed Ruth as a determined, self reliant, capable Lady and I was always a little in awe of Her!One time when Richard and I were very young we were wrestling in the laundry room and dumped over a bottle of clorox. We cleaned it up with the clothes in the laundry room a remedy that Ruth was not at all pleased with!I do value my Freindships with all of you and my thoughts are with you.

Our family came to Alaska in 1959, Ruth and her sons and daughters became our life long friends. Ruth with her sparkling blue eyes and that contagious smile will always be etched in my memory. Ruth's legacy is in her children, her work ethic and moral compass was passed on to a great bunch of hardworking people. While I sit here in my recliner and reflect upon my upbringing and those that influenced my life I have to thank God for guiding my family to a family like the Gudschinsky, Neffs on Laurene st. You were in my life 66 years and I loved every one of them, Love you Mom.

As I was growing up in Fairbanks, my mother, Edna Huber and Ruth were best friends. My Mom and Ruth were pregnant together, Me first and Cheryl,Ruth's daughter, my best friend, a couple months later.

Growing up Cheryl and I would run amok through the neighborhood. Ruth ALWAYS knew what we were up to. One day we asked her how she always new what we were doing and she said, "My birds told me".

One word of wisdom as a young child she taught me was to not put my arms and hands out the window of a moving car. She would say, "Don't stick your elbow out to far, it could go home in another car".

She passed on those beautiful blue eyes to Cheryl and Cheryl passed them on to each of her beautiful daughters, Marney, Coley and Margaret.

Rest in Peace Momma Ruth, your legacy lives on in my heart. By the way, say Hi to my momma in heaven!!

I was given the opportunity to care for Grandma Ruth, a couple years ago when I lived in Fairbanks. She was a character and always made me smile. I am glad I got to enjoy the time I did, during her last years here. She was the last of our Grandparents, and she will always be remembered and deeply missed.
