Anne McLaurin Obituary

Anne McLaurin
January 4, 1948 - April 22, 2021
Raleigh, North Carolina - Anne Norris McLaurin died at her home in Boylan Heights on April 22, 2021 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Dr. McLaurin, as she was known to her patients, was 73 years old.
Born in Boston, Anne grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio with her four siblings (Cokie, Meg, Bob and Hugh – all surviving). Although Anne was so shy that she had a hard time answering questions in class, she excelled at field hockey.
It is also reported that Anne went skinny dipping in the Ohio River with one of her high school boyfriends – and that was years before the EPA existed!
Anne graduated from Rice University in 1969 as a biology major. She was elected homecoming queen there in the fall of 1968.
After teaching English for a year in Medellin, Columbia, Anne started medical school at the University of Cincinnati in 1970.
There were five women in her first-year class of over 100 students. All five, Anne included, were at the top of their class four years later.
Anne then worked as a resident in family medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital, south of Miami, from 1974–1977.
Upon visiting her sister Meg in Raleigh in the spring of 1978, Anne interviewed for and accepted a position as a family doctor with Wake Health Services. She worked there from 1978-1988, and then with Dr. Dick Wilson started Wilson & McLaurin Family Medical Practice in Apex from 1990-1995.
In 1995, Anne and Dick helped to found SAS Healthcare, and Anne worked there until 2009. Anne finished her career at Alliance Medical Center from 2009-2014.
Anne also served from 1980-1990 as Chief Medical Officer for the Women's Correctional Center on Bragg Street.
After her long career in medicine, Anne leaves innumerable grateful patients in Raleigh and throughout Wake County. And Anne likewise cherished her relationships with all of her patients.
While interviewing for the Wake Health Services position in 1978, Anne met one of the board members, Charles Meeker. When Charles asked whether her husband had accompanied her on the visit to Raleigh, Anne replied, "No, I haven't met him yet."
That, it turns out, was not exactly right. Anne and Charles began dating eight months later. They were married on the side yard of their home in Boylan Heights in May 1980.
Being interested in children for years and having studied well-baby care, Anne was ready to start her family right away. Her daughter Emily was born a year later in 1981, and her son David was born two years after, in 1983.
Anne was proud of her children from the start, providing diligent care from day one. As they grew, she became a regular attendee of their numerous athletic events.
Anne was also proud of her grandchildren – Kathleen (Emily Meeker and Steve Carey) and Wright and Grey (David and Kimberlie Meeker). Anne spent a lot of time with Kathleen and Wright in their early months to get them off to good starts.
Anne was dedicated to serving her community. In addition to her service at the Women's Correctional Center, she was a leader of the Boylan Heights summer camp and volunteered at the Crosby Clinic adjacent to Chavis Heights. Anne served on the Wake County Board of Education from 2007-2011, and was a voice of reason during years when the majority of the Board had lost its way.
Anne attended numerous community events when Charles was Mayor from 2001-2011. For those she met, Anne always had a smile and a kind comment. The accompanying picture was taken when Anne rode in the ceremonial first car during the re-opening of Fayetteville Street in July 2006.
In 2016 and in recognition of her contributions in medicine and community service, Anne was inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame.
In her personal time, Anne was an avid reader and loved to travel. She especially enjoyed visiting Central and South America (Inca Trail in Peru, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico, and a medical mission to Honduras) as well as Europe (Portugal, Greek Islands, Vienna, and Prague). She could be regularly found walking in her neighborhood and throughout Raleigh – in earlier years, with the children of Boylan Heights often in tow, and in later years, with her close companion, her dog Austin.
Anne was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in the fall of 2016. She lived at home in Boylan Heights until January 2020, when she moved to Waltonwood on Lake Boone. The staff there was particularly kind to her during the COVID-19 pandemic, when family visits were limited. Her family is also thankful for the many caregivers who looked after her during her illness.
Anne returned home to Boylan Heights two weeks prior to her death, to be cared for by her family and to be visited by friends.
Anne McLaurin lived her life the way she wanted to – caring for her patients, raising her family, and engaging in community and neighborhood life. May Anne's spirit remain with us.
In lieu of flowers, Anne's family asks that a donation be made to the Project Enlightenment Foundation or Alliance Medical Ministry. A celebration of Anne's life will be held at a later date.

Charles - I was so saddened to hear about Anne. The last time she and I talked was at Burning Coal - as always, she was engaging, fun, and just a delight. Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I loved Anne from the moment we first met. She was sweet and kind, intelligent and thoughtful, and always had others in mind before herself. As the medical director at Wake Health Services, Inc., I hired her instantly to be our first board certified family physician She became the medical director at the Tarboro Road Clinic working with Sandy Hendrickson and other nurse practitioners. They also loved her and depended on her close friendship and wisdom in their patient care. She was a dear friend and we maintained an enduring close professional relationship. When I retired from the medical directorship there she quickly filled my shoes and much more. What a fabulous and gifted person she was. Our community will be diminished in her absence. Dear Charles,

I just learned of Anne’s death and want to express my sadness and condolences.

By suggesting to Trip that I consider working at Women’s Prison (a suggestion I vehemently resisted) she set me on a path that opened my perspective, challenged my assumptions and made me a kinder, more compassionate person. With her quiet determination and encouragement, Anne enabled me to do that work. She was an enormous support to me. I will never forget our early morning visit to try to convince Jim Hunt to commute Velma Barfield’s sentence to life without parole. We both left the mansion knowing our efforts were futile, glad that Hunt was merely the governor and not a member of our families.

That was the only time I saw Anne angry. She helped me see the humanity at all levels in Women’s Prison. She was a marvelous mentor and good friend.

I know you and your children have many wonderful memories. Anne was a cut above. I am very grateful to her.

Trip joins me in sending love and condolences.

All my best,
Rivka Gordon

Mr.Meeker, Emily & David,
Dr.McLaurin was a one of a kind person and always willing to help when it came to helping the children and needy. She was always willing to help me out any time my athletes needed a physical. She was a very positive and upbeat person. Her passing is a huge loss for our community. I will always be grateful for everything she did for the Ligon community. I've always seen those positive values instilled in both David and Emily.

I was Mrs. Anne Med Tech at Waltonwood of Lake Boone. Mrs. Anne was a pleasant soul to take care of. You could tell that she had compassion even in the state of what she was going through. Sometimes she the thought her being a doctor would come back and she would want to help the different Residents there. We at Waltonwood love Mrs. Anne and she will be truly missed. I am stunned and so saddened. Dr. McLaurin , Anne, was a dear friend and I am a former close colleague in her years at the NC Correctional Center for Women . I was fortunate to become the Superintendent there from 1982-1987 and we worked so closely . I depended on Anne to guide me in establishing many health, welfare policies ( including a science based AIDS policy ) for the incarcerated women. We shared difficult challenges. I have since been one of her biggest advocates, admirers and was privileged to write a recommendation for the Raleigh Hall of Fame. Anne was one of the finest human beings I have ever known and we all who know her are diminished by her loss. Prayers and Light for you , Charles , and your family .

Anne always had the children of Wake County first and foremost in her mind.
As a School Board Member she treated the staff with respect and kindness. She was a gracious person and always approachable.

We last saw her a couple of years ago and it was so very nice to speak to her. She will be missed.

Charles, Emily and David,

I am so sorry to hear of your mom’s struggle with Alzheimer’s and her passing.

I came to know her through advocacy work at Wiley and stopping to chat, usually about WCPSS issues, while on her dog walks.

She touched so many beyond the many noble efforts noted in her obituary. She served as a founding board member of the Cecilia Rawlins Fund, named for her neighbor, friend and long-time principal of Wiley Elementary. The CRF raises money to help provide BackPack Buddies and other support services for families in need at Wiley.

She asked me to be part of a committee of community members that provided feedback during the school board troubles.

Her support and encouragement helped me find my civic voice, inspiring me to volunteer with community organizations and political campaigns, and ultimately working for Inter-Faith Food Shuttle and Alliance Medical Ministry.

I am grateful to have known her, been greeted by the sunshine of her smile and the warmth of her kindness and laughter.

Peace and love to you all.

Anne’s wicked sense of humor and quick replies to any subtle remarks in areas of of interest to Anne are fondly remembered. She was quiet while carefully listening, never missing a beat before a quick and sometimes full of humor reply. If you had her attention, you felt warm from the sunshine of her smile. We both miss you Anne. Kyle and Gerry Highsmith

I met Anne here on Cape Cod when her family would visit her grandfather, Martin Spellman in the 60s. She was a beautiful soul then and it was obvious she was the kind of person who would mature into an incredibly kind generous giving adult, an enormous asset to her community. Rest In Peace, sweet girl.
