Arthur "Art" Weiner

Greensboro

Arthur "Art" Weiner, 87, passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2013.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church.

Art was born on August 16, 1926 in Newark, NJ to the late George and Ann Weiner. He served four years in the Marines during WWII stationed in Hawaii. Art received his Bachelor's and Masters degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While attending UNC he was a two time First Team All American in 1948 and 1949 with their football team. Art was a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and a member of the National College Football Hall of Fame. After graduating he coached and taught at Kings Mountain High School. Art retired as a Vice President of Burlington Industries after 25 years; was president of Weiner Garmon Reality; and owner of Art Weiner Travel.

In addition to his parents Art was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Weiner; sister, Peggy Minneci; and son-in-law, John McSwain.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marion "Boots" Weiner; children, Gregg Weiner and wife Nannapat; Patrick Weiner and wife Ellen, and Beth McSwain; grandchildren, Scott, Phillip, and Sally Weiner , and Tanat Charoenpot , Zachary and wife Melissa Weiner, and Natalie Weiner, Will, Lynne, and Jake McSwain; great-grandchild, Hannah McSwain and granddaughter in-law, Nicole McSwain.

The family will receive friends Friday, December 27, 2013, from 6 – 8 PM at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street Chapel.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Guilford Park Presbyterian Church, 2100 Fernwood Dr, Greensboro, NC 27408 or the Salvation Army, 1311 S Eugene St, Greensboro, NC 27406.

Saddened to learn of Coach Weiner's passing. It was around 1951 that he and his wife came to Kings Mountain, NC where he became head coach for the KMHS football team. My dad sold the couple new furniture and I assisted in delivering it to their home on Meadowbrook Road which was the town's newest subdivision, Crescent Hill. That year I was playing 9th grade football so was not on his team but I was in his PE class where he enjoyed pitching his "old blooper" during softball games. After breaking my collar bone he visited with our family and put his autograph on my cast. Coach Weiner stayed one year in Kings Mountain and I only got to speak with him on two occasions thereafter. The first was when I had a job interview at Burlington Industries in Greensboro and the second was at the funeral service of Charlie Justice. I'll always remember him as a very genuine coach and teacher who had a special zest for living.

We would like to express our condolences to Art's family.
We saw both Art and Boots at the last UNC College Football reunion - I (Bob) had the pleasure of being a teammate of Art's on the 1946-1949 UNC Football teams.
Art was a great athlete, but even more; a great person and
citizen. He was a superlative representative for the University and the state of North Carolina.

Dear Boots and family,
Please accept our deepest sympathy on the passing of my cousin, "Artie." My family and I were so sorry to learn of the sad news of his passing. Art will be greatly missed. As all who new him, we were extremely proud of his service to our country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. and his induction into both the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. He lived a life of great achievements, most blessed of all, his life with you and your dear family. Art was a great man and we know that God has prepared a special place in heaven with Him, along with his dear parents, brother, sister and his beloved Aunt, Barbara. My Mom thought the world of Artie...sent letters and care packages to him while in the service and kept him in her prayers, always. We pray that God will bless you and grant you peace and strength.
