A poem by Barry: "No happy without sad, no good without bad. No rich without poor, no less without more. No hot without cold, no young without old. No light without dark, no bite without bark. No babies without mamas, no mamas without papas. No up without down, no smile without frown. No green without blue, AND no BARRY'S without YOU!"

There are few people you meet in life that make the kind of impact as Barry made on me and many of my students at CCMMS. He was a true example of a good man. Integrity, grace, compassion, and a spirit larger than life, describes this incredible man. I have been blessed to call him a friend. My thoughts and prayers to his beautiful wife and incredible daughter. What a special family. You will always live on in my heart, Barry.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the Doyle family. Knew Barry from eating regularly at the cafe but mostly from our daily interactions at the corner store. Always had a kind word and even a joke or two to share. I know a man of his caliber is in a better place.

My son played on the "Barry's Cafe" team at West Raleigh. We made it a point to stop in the cafe to eat OFTEN during those years. Since then, we continue to visit Barry's and always enjoyed our meals, but more importantly, the times we saw Barry and Thanked him for supporting youth sports. He will be greatly missed. Prayers for Denise and Catherine, and ALL the Doyle family. NO DOUBT Barry will be greatly missed. Our sympathies, the Kettler Family

Like many others we met Barry and Denise when the Café first opened. Barry would always come to our table and speak to us while entertaining our children with his duck puppet. The kids have never forgotten those days and we are thankful for all the good memories at Barry's Café. We also got to know Barry through our dental family and helping our son with a summer job. Remembering Barry's generous, cheerful, and gentle soul will forever remain in our hearts. Our most sincere condolences, The Turner Family

Denise and Catherine. Doug and I were so sad to hear of Barry's passing. He was one of a kind for sure. We remember the first time we came to Barry's about 20 years ago You and Barry both made us feel so very welcome from that first visit and still do today. Barry always took time to stop and talk with us along with everyone else when he would see you. It always amazed me how he always remembered everyone by name. He was a true hero to all especially the firefighters. He brightened your day with his smile and a joke or just a funny story. Keep all those good memories with you to brighten and help you through the days to come. i know he would be so proud of both of you with the strength you have shown through all these sad days. RIP Barry Doyle. You will be so missed but never forgotten.

I am thinking about Barry Doyle this morning and send prayers to his family. He was a dynamic personality that most of us knew from eating at Barry's Cafe. He gave to the community in one of the best ways ever, establishing a foundation for feeding emergency responders. He made us smile many times when eating at Barry's and showed us all how to be courageous when life throws us challenges. My admiration extends to his wife who also showed us how to face life full on and still find a smile for us when we came in to eat. We who ate there also watched their daughter grow through the years and her parents eyes light up when we ask about her. Barry and his family has blessed our lives and now we ask for peace and blessings for them.

Barry Doyle was a good man. The first time I met him I liked him. Barry was working for Clancy and Theys Construction Company at the time. He was a big strapping man with a quick smile and would look you in the eye without flinching. I liked that. We lost touch for a while but when he opened up the café we reunited. Right now is a time of sorrow and loss for Denise and Catherine and Barry's extended family. My heart, my love, my prayers and my condolences go out to you. It was my privilege to know Barry and to call him my friend. He enriched my life and the lives of everyone that he met. Rest in peace my friend.

Denise and Catherine,
As the multitude of others in the community, we met Barry at his restaurant back in the 90's when Barry's Restaurant first opened. He always made us feel welcome and was very engaging....with a story to tell if not too busy. We found ourselves eating there for the fellowship of Barry, Denise and at times their daughter, Catherine ..plus the good food. The photo proudly displayed on the wall of the restaurant of Barry holding young Catherine standing on the palm of his hand made for a lot of loving father stories! Denise and Catherine, Our heartfelt sympathy and prayers are with you during this difficult time. He will be missed by all. Terry and Kathy Baker

Our family grew up eating at Barry's Cafe. The food was always great, but the fellowship and general kindness displayed by the folks taking care of things at Barry's are what keeps us coming back. As most folks know, Barry had not been at the Cafe regularly for some years. When he did come in and saw us he always made a point of checking on us (and everyone else) to make sure everything was good and that we were being taken care of. Generally our conversations were brief, but we were always amazed that whenever we asked Barry how things were going or how he was doing, not one time was his answer anything other than things were great and he was doing wonderful. We admired his courage and his general philosophy of always deflecting attention from himself. We will all miss Barry! Denise and Catherine, we are thinking about you.

My thoughts and prayers are with Barry's family during this time of great loss. He was an A+ guy and admired by legions of friends who will miss him. I remember his Feed the Firefighters efforts and his general goodness for all. I still have a photo of my grandsons sitting on one of his firetrucks. Loved his hamburgers, too. May he Rest In Peace.

Susan Luerich

April 16, 2017

We have been eating at Barry's Cafe since it opened. We always left happier than we were when we arrived. We loved hearing the story of how Barry came to create the Feed The Firefighters Foundation.

We have our own story about Barry's generosity: After Hurricane Fran in September, 1996, we were without power for 5 days and had many huge trees down, so each day was filled with the hard, hot, work of cleanup. One morning we took a break and went over to Barry's for brunch. We were embarrassed about our appearance, but that didn't bother Barry. When he found out we had no power, he asked if we had any ice. Our eyes must have glazed over because he took us to the back room and gave us 2 huge bags of ice (This was when people were charging scalpers prices for ice). It may not sound like much, but it was gold to us, and just one small example of his generosity.

Barry, you will be missed. Denise and Catherine, you are in our hearts and prayers.

Summer of 1994 was a horrible summer for me and a friend of mine. Going to Barry's for dinner on Friday nights became a regular thing for the two of us. The back booth on the right (on the original side) was "our booth". There, with Barry's help, we solved the world's problems LOL

We knew as soon as we walked in that we would be greeted warmly by Barry and that he would make a point to come sit with us in "our booth" just to ask us how we were doing. He never knew how much that meant to both of us.

Barry was a friend to all and will be greatly missed by all of us.

Just about 17 years ago we were looking for a house and were attracted to this area. One day our agent took us to see the house that we live in to this day, and afterwards she suggested that we go to this great local place for lunch, where they have the best hamburgers and lots of other wonderful things. Of course it was Barry's, a landmark we have frequented and cherished, ever since. I told a co-worker about it. His 5 year old son dreamed of one day becoming a firefighter, so they made the pilgrimage from Durham, just to see this shrine to firefighters tucked away in Swift Creek. And like anyone who visited once, they came again and again, drawn to the warm hospitality, the great food and the unexpected but most welcome cookie that punctuated the end of yet another satisfying meal. I recall being in the same line as Barry in our local supermarket. He recognized me as a patron of his restaurant, but he talked to me like a friend and neighbor. It was just his way. We'll always be grateful to Barry, his family, and his extended family, for making us feel at home even before we knew where our home would be.

Denise and family, Although we only know you, Denise, through our visits to Barry's with our children Elizabeth and Justin Plotkin, Carter and Sam, our hearts are saddened by your loss. We will so miss the love and friendship that Barry showed to everyone who came in his cafe. He has had it tough the last few years, but still had a joke to tell when he was able to come in to work. Love, and prayers for you, Denise, and Catherine as you go through your grief. Our love.

Barry's woodworking skills are in our home where he did the trim work 30 years ago. We also had the privilege of capturing his smile as he held Catherine in the palm of his hand (displayed in the cafe). Enjoyed many Papa and Mama burgers with him. He always had a big smile. Now he and John are with Jesus in Heaven. Love, Prayers, and Peace to Denise and Catherine.

Many thanks to Barry for the servant's heart he exhibited with his generosity for emergency services in our area. So many times his efforts probably exceeded those of the responders he was serving. Rest in peace knowing you took good care of us...and that you were "one of us".
