Long-time resident of Raleigh, Ben Gunter Nottingham died Saturday, December 23, 2017. Ben was born June 8, 1926 in Franktown, Virginia to Maude Taylor and Judge John Edward Nottingham Jr. His beloved wife of sixty-four years, Jean Ann, passed away on June 5, 2017. Two brothers, John Edward Nottingham III. and Charles Dunning Nottingham II, daughter, Marian Nottingham Rice, and daughter-in-law Sally Steiner Nottingham predeceased him.

Three sons survive him, Ben Gunter Nottingham Jr., Walter Parvin Nottingham, and Andrew Taylor Nottingham and his wife, Darlene, and six grandchildren Marian Taylor Rice, Carey Brent Rice Jr., Kade Colt Nottingham, Haley Marie Nottingham, Benjamin Tyler Nottingham, and Richie Nottingham.

Ben served in the U.S. Navy for two years. After serving during World War II, he graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Biology and later with a Master's Degree in Economics. He served in several business ventures of his uncle, A.E. Finley. First, he served as an agribusiness manager of two cattle ranches and citrus groves in Florida. In Raleigh, he managed the College Inn restaurant for over twenty years. In his later years, he ran a real estate business in Garner.

Ben was a lover of the outdoors, especially duck hunting and fishing. Ben and Jean Ann loved spending time at the beach in Salter Path, North Carolina and also Captiva Island, Florida. Ben was on the board of directors at the A.E. Finley Foundation, which makes donations to numerous charitable organizations, hospitals and universities. He was a member of Southbridge Fellowship in Raleigh.

The visitation will be held on Thursday, December 28th from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Montlawn Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Friday, December 29th at 1:00 PM at the Montlawn Funeral Home Chapel.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living at North Hills and Transitions LifeCare for their compassionate care. Memorial donations may be made to Southbridge Fellowship, 8609 Jersey Court, Raleigh, N.C. 27617 or Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, N.C. 27607.
